Adopt Jerry

Labrador Retriever · Male · Young · 3 years

Gender: male Birthday: April 2013 Castrated/Neutered: yes Weight: 24,5kg Back story: Jerry has been at the shelter for a very long time (10+ years). Not much is known about his past, but Jerry is extremely cautious around people. Describtion/Updates/Pictures: Update July 2025: What to say about Jerry? He is one of the founding fathers of the Souda Shelter Project. He’s been there since the beginning of our time. He is anti social with humans. He does not like to be touched at all. He is terrified of us. Everyone. Or at least we thought. Yesterday he had his annual checkup at the vet and the doctor noted that he had seborrhea and recommended that we bathe him with a shampoo for seborrheic dermatitis. How the heck would we do that?! Jerry?! Contact?! And yet, the team did. Jerry has been at the shelter for ten years plus. People immediately dismiss him because he barks and is timid. Well this is the other side of Jerry. He has NEVER gotten this kind of treatment ever, we thought he would hate it. Far from it. To more spa treatments Jerry! We love you and hope someone will see this post and love you the same♥️ (maybe even more). Please don’t let his life amount to time in a shelter. Give this old boy a chance and show him something new, secure and wonderful…a home Update December 2021: This sweet boy is a gentle soul who gets along well with other animals, but he is quite cautious and fearful around people. He may approach them for a treat, but he is not yet comfortable with being touched. Jerry is in need of a special home with an experienced handler who can understand his fear and help him build trust and confidence. He needs someone who is patient and willing to take the time to help him overcome his fears, and who can provide him with a safe and comfortable environment where he can thrive. With the right guidance, Jerry has the potential to become a loving and loyal companion. If you are an experienced handler who is looking for a special companion to share your life with, Jerry may be the perfect match for you. Update August 2019:

About Jerry

What life with Jerry looks like

Jerry is a large young adult labrador retriever dog waiting at Souda Shelter in Chania.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Seborrhea (skin condition requiring medicated baths)

🇬🇷Adopting from Greece

Greek shelters often partner with Northern European rescue groups for placements. Animals are sterilized, vaccinated, and chipped before adoption. Fees vary widely depending on whether the shelter is municipal or NGO-run.

Frequently asked

Adopting Jerry, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Jerry?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Souda Shelter handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Jerry on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Jerry if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Souda Shelter will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Jerry already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Jerry isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Souda Shelter early rather than rehoming privately; they know Jerry and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
