Adopt Jochen

Male · 4 years

Jochen is an imposing herding dog who landed at the animal shelter because his owners could not cope with his breed-specific behavior. Unfortunately, there have been biting incidents with strangers in the past, which led to him being classified as dangerous and requiring a muzzle and leash. Through intensive work, Jochen has made great progress and passed his behavioral assessment with distinction. With his people, he is a loyal, seasoned, and attached companion. He meets strangers with suspicion, a typical trait from his original purpose. Accordingly, he requires a longer getting-to-know-you phase to build trust. He gets along well with other dogs and shows good social behavior, making him a good candidate for a second dog. He masters leash walking as long as he is led with authority and consistency. Otherwise, he tends to bully other dogs and follow his prey drive. We are looking for a home in a rural area with a securely fenced yard for Jochen, as he would defend his "territory" against strangers. Additionally, the access should be ground-level, as his size and mass do not allow for constant stair climbing. There should be no children or other animals (except fellow animals) present. Herding dogs are not beginner dogs, so future owners must bring the necessary experience. In a stable environment, with the right guidance, and with people who meet his needs, Jochen will be a loyal and loving companion. Please note: Jochen was classified as dangerous. For more information on dangerous dogs, see further down on this page under the point "Further Information in Video Form." Dangerous Dog: Jochen was classified as dangerous.

About Jochen

What life with Jochen looks like

Jochen is a extra-large adult dog waiting at Tierheim Hannover in Hannover.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Classified as dangerous dog with muzzle and leash requirements due to past biting incidents. Needs secure fenced property, ground-level access, and experienced handler.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Jochen, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Jochen?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Hannover handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Jochen on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Jochen if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Hannover will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Jochen already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Jochen isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Hannover early rather than rehoming privately; they know Jochen and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
