Joe

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Adult · 4 years

The wonderful Podenco Joe has been in the care of our animal welfare partner Julieta since January 2022. When he arrived at the animal shelter, not only did his sad eyes speak volumes, but his small, skinny body was also covered with many different wounds. Clearly, his past was not what one would wish for a beloved pet. Joe was taken from Julieta by a killing station, where he was given to a hunter to die. If you look at Joe's physical and mental condition at this time, you can immediately see how he must have lived. Joe must have made very bad experiences with people. Every time we enter his kennel, our hearts break. You can see in his eyes that he is afraid of new people. Therefore, we are looking for people who really have a lot of time and also give him his "privacy." But Joe is not so easily broken as a true Podenco! He has now adapted to life here at the dog shelter and understands that no one here wants to harm him. In dealing with his fellow animals, he shows himself to be compatible with all other dogs in the shelter situation. Neither conflict, dominance, nor fear could be observed. He fits into the sovereign group and orientates himself to it. We wish for him adopters or a foster home that has experience with anxious dogs and a gentle, sensitive way of handling them. He had the good fortune to have been trained for a while by someone so that he could learn about harnesses and leashes. Unfortunately, that is no longer possible at the moment, so Joe needs a home where he can be trained with patience and, ideally, a four-legged assistant, and where he has all the time in the world until he can do it. Accordingly, he needs a place on the land with a secure garden until he can go for walks. If we find someone who takes him on the journey into a regulated daily routine, a fragile, scarred soul will surely become a lovable "Pumuckel" just like the Podifans love. As they say: "Once Podi – always Podi!" 😉 © 2006-2024 by animal welfare association Europa e.V. This animal was surrendered to the shelter.

DE·Show original

- All rights reserved

About Joe

What life with Joe looks like

Joe is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein Europa in München.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Joe, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Joe?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Europa handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Joe on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Joe if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Europa will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Joe already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Joe isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Europa early rather than rehoming privately; they know Joe and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
