Joep

Rottweiler · Male · Senior · 9 years

Hi, I'm Joep. A cheerful man of 9 years old! You shouldn't pay attention to my age, I behave much younger! Sometimes I really enjoy running after a ball. But you need to bring treats, otherwise you won't get him back. My previous owner couldn't take good care of me, I weighed only 28kg when I was taken from home. Now I'm a strong big boy again, 45kg. Unfortunately, I have developed food aggression because of this. This means I'm very focused on my food and I don't let anyone come near me. I actually do dare to bite if you try. We can easily solve this. Give me my food in the crate or at a place where you can leave me alone? Then there's nothing to worry about! But honestly. If I take your delicious steak from your plate, you would get angry too, right? Besides my food aggression, you fortunately don't notice that I wasn't well cared for. I really love cuddles! I like to stand between your legs for tickles. Then I dance on my hind legs. Inside the house I am just a very kind old man who likes to lie down next to you.

About Joep

What life with Joep looks like

Joep is a senior rottweiler dog waiting at DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam in Amsterdam.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Joep, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Joep?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Joep on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Joep if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Joep already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Joep isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam early rather than rehoming privately; they know Joep and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
