Joey

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 5 years

Joey at a glance; 5 years old. Can be an only dog or live with compatible dogs. Can live with confident, dog-savvy cats. Suitable for calm children aged 12+. Loves walks, long-line adventures and secure fields. Dedicated squirrel patrol officer. Treats are definitely the way to his heart. Shy initially, but forms lovely bonds with his people Joey is a lovely 5-year-old boy looking for a home where he can finally settle down and enjoy the good life he deserves. Joey’s journey hasn’t been the easiest. He was rescued from a kill shelter in Romania in 2021 and then spent a couple more years waiting in another shelter before eventually making his way into foster care. Despite his past, Joey is a cheeky, comical little character. He can be shy when first meeting new people, but he warms up surprisingly quickly — especially if treats are involved! Once you’ve become one of his special people, you may even be lucky enough to receive his brilliant little greeting dance, which never fails to make us smile. One of Joey’s absolute favourite things is going out on his long line. He is a very good boy on it and loves having the freedom to sniff, explore and investigate the world around him. Squirrel spotting is a particular hobby — preferably followed by an enthusiastic chase and a good bark at them once they’ve escaped up a tree! He also loves trips to a secure field, where he is happiest pottering around, exploring and doing his own thing. Joey is good with other dogs and could happily live with another suitable dog, but he isn’t particularly reliant on canine company. He tends to mind his own business and seems to prefer the company and attention of his people, so he would also be perfectly happy as the only dog in the home. He could live with confident, dog-savvy cats and calm, sensible children aged 12 and over. Joey would suit a patient home that understands he may need a little time to feel completely comfortable at first. Once he knows you, his funny, affectionate and cheeky personality begins to shine through. After spending so much of his life waiting, Joey is ready for someone to choose him. He doesn’t ask for much — some patience, good walks, plenty of treats and people of his own to entertain with his little dances and cheeky personality. Joey fostered Norwich Norfolk. If you are interested please message or call between 9am to 5pm Mon – Fri or 9am to 4pm Sat. . Adoption Donation Fees From 1st Dec 2025 are Puppies already neutered and all adult dogs: £430. Un-neutered puppies on spay/neuter contracts: £530 (You will receive a £100 rebate once you send us proof of neutering). Senior dogs (10+ years): £150–£250 (depending on age and individual needs). Adoption Policy When you adopt a Safe Rescue dog, you MUST use a slip lead. This will keep your dog safe: your new dog will be nervous and will not trust you, and you will not know which situations might upset your dog. If your dog panics, then a slip lead is the only way to prevent your dog from escaping (many dogs can escape from a collar and/or harness). It will take AT LEAST 3-6 months for your dog to settle-in and for you to know your dog fully (longer for nervous dogs). The slip lead must ALWAYS be used during this settling-in period. Even after your dog is settled, it is safest to use the slip lead in situations where your dog may become scared (e.g. visiting new places, around unfamiliar people, at the vet), and it situations where unexpected triggers might happen (e.g. around bonfire night). Nervous dogs may always need to wear a slip-lead as a back-up safety measure. The slip lead is a safety device and must NEVER be used as a training tool. Using the lead to apply pressure to the dog’s neck is damaging. If your dog pulls on the lead, then we can advise you on training methods that avoid harm. Once your dog is settled, you may want to consider using a harness (together with the slip lead) if your dog is comfortable with being handled when it is fitted. Most harnesses are not escape-proof, but harnesses with a strap behind the ribcage (e.g. Ruffwear Webmaster or Perfect Fit Harnesses) are safer. Retractable / extendable leads must never be used on our dogs. Adopted dogs must be collected from the rescue and transported straight home in a crate. Fences and gates must be 5ft min & secure. All dogs are vaccinated, microchipped and neutered (unless the dog is too young to be neutered). Joey at a glance; 5 years old. Can be an only dog or live with compatible dogs. About Joey

What life with Joey looks like

Joey is an adult mixed breed dog waiting at Safe Rescue for Dogs in United Kingdom.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Joey, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Joey?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Safe Rescue for Dogs handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Joey on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Joey if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Safe Rescue for Dogs will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Joey already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Joey isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Safe Rescue for Dogs early rather than rehoming privately; they know Joey and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
