Johnny

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Senior · 18 years

Johnny is a special cat, one that stays in your heart. He is a FeLV+ (feline leukemia virus positive) kitten, a condition that unfortunately makes him more fragile but no less deserving of love, respect, and dignity. His story is also a symbol of what every animal welfare association fights against every day: abandonment, neglect, and lack of prevention. Johnny lost an eye due to a serious infection that was never treated. An avoidable pain if only someone had taken the responsibility to provide him with the necessary care. This is the direct result of the lack of sterilization and birth control, which leads to unwanted litters and, too often, lives marked by suffering. The volunteers in Lecce, already struggling and without adequate structure, asked for help for him. They did not turn away, despite their limited resources. It is thanks to people like them that Johnny today has a chance. But it’s not enough to save: we must prevent. Johnny’s story reminds us how crucial it is to choose sterilization of cats as an act of responsibility and civilization. Sterilization means reducing homelessness, avoiding diseases like FeLV, and protecting thousands of animals from cruel fates. Every day, too many cats are abandoned, left to fight alone against hunger, disease, and indifference. Johnny is one of those who made it, but how many others don’t have the same luck? At the moment, for Johnny, we are only looking for distant adoption, a concrete gesture to help us ensure he gets the care, food, and safety he needs. If you want to support him, we invite you to read the section on our website dedicated to distant adoptions, where we explain in detail how to adopt a cat at a distance. Supporting associations, adopting consciously, and promoting sterilization are concrete actions that can change the future. For Johnny and for all the invisible ones, it’s time to make a difference. Animal Welfare Association ODVI registered at the Regional Voluntary Association Register with Directive Act n. 102/SA of 21/05/2008, number 260. Fiscal Code: 92049230516. About Johnny

What life with Johnny looks like

Johnny is a small senior mixed breed cat waiting at Lo Scudo di Pan - Rifugio per Animali in Italy.

Senior cats are the gentlest house guests: predictable, mostly silent, and grateful for a sunny windowsill. Older cats often have minor dental or kidney issues — keep an eye on water intake and weight. Many sleep eighteen hours a day and want no part of any drama.

🇮🇹Adopting from Italy

Italian canili require adopters to sign a stewardship contract (affido) and may retain the right to verify the animal's wellbeing post-adoption. Animals are chipped and sterilized before leaving (Legge 281/91). Public canili rifugio typically waive adoption fees.

Frequently asked

Adopting Johnny, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Johnny?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Lo Scudo di Pan - Rifugio per Animali handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Johnny on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Johnny if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Lo Scudo di Pan - Rifugio per Animali will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Johnny already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Johnny isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Lo Scudo di Pan - Rifugio per Animali early rather than rehoming privately; they know Johnny and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (IT). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
