Joniar

Unknown · Senior · 11 years

Heart adoption for a very needy senior. Joniar, a small mixed breed, born in May 2015 and abandoned in the spring of 2025 in pitiful condition. He arrived at the dog shelter with a flea dermatitis, a serious perianal hernia, thin and scared. Underwent surgery to reduce the hernia and for sterilization, he is now recovering with determination and will soon be ready to start a new life. Joniar is a small dog with a particular character. He likes company, but prefers his space to be respected: he willingly accepts calm and respectful contact, and appreciates those who understand his pace. He is an ideal companion for someone looking for a faithful but independent friend, capable of giving moments of affection without being excessively intrusive. With other dogs, it's clear right from the start: he is possessive about his resources like food, water, and toys, and does not hesitate to make himself respected with growls and barks if someone tries to invade his space. This means that his ideal family should be willing to manage this particular trait, perhaps by offering him an environment where he feels safe and his resources are guaranteed. Despite his little "quirks," Joniar also has a playful and tender side: he loves playing with the ball! Watching him run after and bring back the ball is a real joy. And when he's not playing or exploring with his curious nature, he enjoys long naps. There is also an important aspect to consider: Joniar has a heart murmur to be further investigated. This means that his future family should be aware and available to follow veterinary instructions to ensure this little one receives the care he may need. We are looking for Joniar: a patient and understanding family, respecting his pace and need for space. People willing to handle his determined character, especially regarding resource possession. Someone who makes him feel safe and loved, but without forcing him into situations that make him uncomfortable. A family aware of his heart murmur and ready to provide the necessary care. Anyone who loves playing with the ball and appreciates the company of an independent but affectionate small dog! If you think you are the right person to welcome Joniar and give him the chance to finally live a peaceful and loved life, do not hesitate to contact us. He is waiting for you to start a new, beautiful adventure together! He is in a private contracted dog shelter in the province of Rome but we also place him in the north, after the proper pre-adoption home check, vaccinated, with a complete health record of all tests and obviously with a microchip.

About Joniar

What life with Joniar looks like

Joniar is a small senior dog waiting at Associazione ALFA in Roma.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇮🇹Adopting from Italy

Italian canili require adopters to sign a stewardship contract (affido) and may retain the right to verify the animal's wellbeing post-adoption. Animals are chipped and sterilized before leaving (Legge 281/91). Public canili rifugio typically waive adoption fees.

Frequently asked

Adopting Joniar, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Joniar?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Associazione ALFA handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Joniar on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Joniar if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Associazione ALFA will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Joniar already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Joniar isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Associazione ALFA early rather than rehoming privately; they know Joniar and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (IT). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
