Joseph

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 7 years

Joseph is a stunning African Greyhound mix—perfect for experienced dog owners looking for a slightly different kind of canine companion. Joseph is a very distrustful and rather aloof fellow who isn’t particularly interested in the company of other dogs or strangers. Without clear, calm leadership, he tends to bark fiercely at other dogs on the leash and displays strongly pronounced territorial behavior. However, with consistent guidance, he’s perfectly capable of moving quietly and unobtrusively through everyday life and lives comfortably among a small, mixed group of dogs here at our home. This intelligent and highly self-assured male dog needs owners who are up to his challenges and can meet him as an equal. When treated this way, he’s happy to take direction and shows great cooperation in all situations. With his people, Joseph forms a very close bond and loves spending plenty of time with them—but he’s remarkably low-key, often content to doze or simply observe. With his primary caregivers and a few select acquaintances, he also enjoys cuddling immensely and occasionally even reveals his quirky, playful side. Overall, though, he’s a very calm and thoughtful housemate. When visitors (especially those accompanied by dogs) come over, Joseph requires very clearly structured guidance and must be consistently kept out of the way. People who drop by regularly are usually tolerated quite calmly—but that doesn’t mean he wants to be touched by them or constantly stared at and addressed. Joseph reserves his affection for a very small, exclusive circle of people. Joseph absolutely loves hiking and adores being out in nature alone with his humans. Here, he demonstrates remarkable stamina and joy in running—and would be ideally suited for endurance sports such as canicross, trail riding, mountain biking, and more. If you’re able to offer this wonderful, highly unique dog a partnership based on mutual respect and clear, consistent leadership, you’ll gain a highly athletic, calm, uncomplicated, yet above all incredibly loyal companion for life. Do you think you might be the right person for Joseph, or would you like to get to know him better? Then please get in touch with us!

About Joseph

What life with Joseph looks like

Joseph is a extra-large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein für Tirol in Innsbruck.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇦🇹Adopting from Austria

Austrian shelters follow the federal Tierschutzgesetz framework: adopters sign a Schutzvertrag (protection contract) committing to the animal's welfare. Spay/neuter, microchip, and vaccinations are included; fees typically range €150–€350.

Frequently asked

Adopting Joseph, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Joseph?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein für Tirol handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Joseph on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Joseph if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein für Tirol will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Joseph already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Joseph isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein für Tirol early rather than rehoming privately; they know Joseph and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
