Kai

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 7 years

Kai is a roughly six-year-old (born 2019), approximately 50 cm tall male dog who, despite his friendly nature, is unfortunately often overlooked. He is one of those dogs who need time, patience, and a calm environment to build trust. Why Kai is urgently looking for a foster home: His long-time kennel buddy Kari is now allowed to leave the country, but Kai has found no interested adopters. The two dogs share a close bond, but Kai risks being left behind alone. Despite his reserved manner, Kai shows that hope is stirring within him: during a visit by volunteers from the association in August, he dared to leave his hut for the first time, cautiously but curiously approaching the treats offered to him. A small step, but a big sign of trust for him. Since his move to the Stefan Shelter in Izvoru, Kai has had regular contact with people and gentle training sessions. There he is learning to allow touch and to understand that no one wishes him any harm. His development shows that he is ready to open up further if he is given the necessary time. For Kai, we wish for a loving, patient home or an experienced foster home that gives him the chance to settle in peacefully and build trust step by step. He needs people who see his quiet nature, appreciate his progress, and accompany him on his journey. Kai is microchipped, vaccinated, and neutered, and will be placed with a protection contract after a positive preliminary check. General note regarding our dogs: Our dogs in Romania are visited regularly so that we can continually reassess their behavior and development. These personal impressions help us greatly in presenting as accurate a picture as possible of each individual dog. However, we would like to point out that a dog may behave differently in a new environment – with new people, new routines, and new impressions. This is completely normal and part of any process of change. Many dogs open up even faster in a home and show sides that were not visible at the shelter at all. Our assessments are therefore based on current observations but are not a guarantee of every behavior in a new setting. They are meant to provide guidance and show how the dog presents itself at the shelter – and what potential lies within it. We are convinced that with patience, understanding, and a loving environment, every dog can find its way and continue to develop positively.

About Kai

What life with Kai looks like

Kai is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Vierbeiner in Not e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Kai, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Kai?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Vierbeiner in Not e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Kai on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Kai if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Vierbeiner in Not e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Kai already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Kai isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Vierbeiner in Not e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Kai and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
