Karen

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 4 years

Karen is looking for an adult-only home. She would like to be the only cat in the home and will require outdoor access. Karen is a tough little lady who was actually discovered here on-site at the shelter with her kittens! The team carefully emptied one of our huge skips after Karen and her kittens were discovered hiding amongst the rubbish and thankfully we were able to get them all to safety. Despite having to fend for herself and survive as a stray, Karen has done a great job looking after and raising four healthy kittens. Unsurprisingly, after surviving as a stray and having to defend herself and her kittens, Karen has been quite frustrated with now being confined to a shelter pen. However, our team are seeing improvements every day and she gradually seems to be relaxing and letting her guard down more and more. She absolutely loves her food, playing with her toys and has enjoyed rolling around in some catnip too. She does still remain easily spooked and can lash out when overwhelmed, but overall, and considering her history, she’s making great progress. Karen will need an understanding and experienced family who can offer her the time, patience and understanding she needs whilst she adjusts to life as a pet cat. We do suspect she has been in a home at some point in her life previously, but it is very likely she has spent a significant amount of time as a stray prior to being discovered in our skip! She will absolutely need a safe outdoor area to explore once in her new home, to avoid her becoming frustrated. This incredible little lady is a clever girl and tough as old boots having kept not only herself, but her kittens safe. She now more than deserves to finally be able to switch off from survival mode and relax in the safety and security of her forever home, where she can be spoilt rotten with the love she should’ve always known.

About Karen

What life with Karen looks like

Karen is a extra-large adult mixed breed cat waiting at Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter in Newcastle.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Karen, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Karen?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Karen on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Karen if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Karen already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Karen isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter early rather than rehoming privately; they know Karen and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
