Karlchen

Male · Adult · 8 years

April 2026: Unfortunately, there are very bad news from the animal shelter after almost a year for our Karlchen. He had a large growth in his mouth that had to be removed and examined. The biopsy revealed a highly aggressive form of cancer. Fortunately, at the moment Karlchen is doing well and he could return to his friends at the cat shelter, where he has quickly settled in. However, his prognosis is unfortunately poor. We do not know how much time Karlchen has left, and since he struggles greatly with changes and human contact, we do not want to subject him to another move. Therefore, we have decided that he will remain at the cat shelter. Of course, we keep a close eye on him and provide him with everything he needs. In the past months, it has become clear that he feels safe and secure there, among the other cats, his friend Gundel, and his beloved hut in the garden. 15.07.2025: Something is happening with the shy Karlchen. His caregiver writes: "Karlchen is gradually trusting me more when I sit in the shaded area and offer the cats some chicken. Now, Karlchen whimpers sadly when he comes closer. He wants to, but he still cannot overcome the last bit of distance. Otherwise, he tried to climb the fence in the left garden corner to look at what was happening on the other side. Climbing makes him hungry. So, Karlchen carefully made his way to the terrace, then through the left door into the room. He ate his food calmly." Karlchen had been neutered, but his tattoo was no longer readable. So a return to his home is out of the question… At least, the shy tomcat was able to leave our quarantine and now roams around in the cat room with other shy cats.

About Karlchen

What life with Karlchen looks like

Karlchen is a large adult cat waiting at Tierheim Bonn in Bonn.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Karlchen, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Karlchen?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Bonn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Karlchen on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Karlchen if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Bonn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Karlchen already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Karlchen isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Bonn early rather than rehoming privately; they know Karlchen and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
