King Louie (HO183-Horse)

Male · Senior · 24 years

Louie is a chestnut Dartmoor gelding, he was part of a multi-agency rescue and arrived at Hugs as a feral unhandled colt who was extremely malnourished and riddled with lice and worms. He has since flourished into a very playful little chap with a lot of love to give. Louie can be anxious with new people but is a good boy with his regular handlers, he catches, leads, grooms and picks up all his feet nicely. He regularly works with small obstacles and coloured poles in hand and although he can be worried to start with, he gains a lot of confidence from his handler. He is still young and would benefit from a confident home who is happy to continue his education. A home with another young gelding would be best suited to him or a home with a family, where he can keep busy and have some fun. Routine: Louie is currently out 24/7, he is happy to be stabled over night when needed but prefers to be out and moving. He has worn a rug through Winter. Friends: He is currently out with other young geldings, he has recently been gelded as he had a poor start and had to wait a little bit longer than his friends to be castrated. He has not yet been with mares and still has a few too many hormones to be in a field with them yet so needs a gelding only home currently. He’s playful in the field and enjoys a like-minded friend to crash around with, he will happily share hay with his friends. Feeding Requirements: Louie is not on any hard food currently, but does have free access to vitamins and minerals. He has access to adlib forage 24/7 in winter and grazing in the Summer. He has not had his diet restricted due to being a young equine but will need a home happy to manage his weight when he is fully grown. Medical/Vet: Louie is good for the vet and is up to date with vaccinations including Flu, Tetanus and Strangles. Farrier: Louie is good for the farrier, he is trimmed every 6-8 weeks as required. Dentist: Louie has had his teeth checked but has not yet had them rasped due to his age. Vices: N/A Based at: The Hugs Foundation, Bodmin Cornwall. We rehome within the Southwest region, rehomers will be required to travel to our yard and meet the equine and team.

About King Louie (HO183-Horse)

What life with King Louie (HO183-Horse) looks like

King Louie (HO183-Horse) is a small senior horse waiting at The Hugs Foundation in United Kingdom.

Adopting a horse is a long-term commitment that almost always requires either land or a boarding stable. The shelter will discuss the horse's training level, vet history, and what kind of work or companionship they're suited for. Expect ongoing costs: feed, farrier, vet, and stabling.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting King Louie (HO183-Horse), answered.

How do I contact the shelter about King Louie (HO183-Horse)?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. The Hugs Foundation handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw King Louie (HO183-Horse) on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt King Louie (HO183-Horse) if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — The Hugs Foundation will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is King Louie (HO183-Horse) already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most horses on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if King Louie (HO183-Horse) isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with The Hugs Foundation early rather than rehoming privately; they know King Louie (HO183-Horse) and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
