Kiwi

Podenco · Male · Young · 2 years

Kiwi is looking for a countryside home. Kiwi was allowed to travel to Germany to a foster home. Here he is described as: "Kiwi is a male Podenco about 2.5 years old with a very special character. He is an incredibly gentle, sensitive and very people-oriented dog who enchants immediately with his affectionate nature. At the same time, he also brings along a small 'package' and is still at the beginning of his journey. Kiwi needs to learn the basics of being a dog from scratch. In uncertain situations, he strongly relies on his humans and seeks closeness - therefore he definitely needs people who can give him calm, stability and clear orientation. Food is often not much help for him during stressful moments, and in general he is rather picky when it comes to treats. He is housebroken, already responds a little to his name, and has practiced basic signals like 'Stop' and 'Okay' in traffic - this however still needs to be strengthened. Kiwi likes to be outdoors, loves sniffing and running across fields - showing his cheerful zoomies. He also runs nicely alongside when jogging. At the same time, he is sometimes caught by his insecurity in new or difficult to assess situations. Loud noises do not bother him much, but he reacts sensitively to unfamiliar or hard-to-interpret stimuli - in particular, he does not like beeping sounds. In the apartment, Kiwi definitely needs a retreat where he can rest. At the same time, he actively demands closeness and affection. Due to his sensitivity and insecurity, we are looking for a quiet, rather rural home with one or two people who have a lot of time and patience. He is not a beginner's dog. An experienced first dog could additionally provide him with orientation. Children should be older (around 14+) and calm in their dealings with animals. Kiwi has a sensitive stomach, so care should be taken to ensure a well-tolerated, gentle feeding. With the right people, Kiwi will surely continue to blossom and become an incredible loyal companion." Taking responsibility for a rescue dog is always a special challenge. The dogs bring a backpack with past experiences or unlearned situations and need time to adjust to their new life. Would you like to take on the challenge and give this sweet male dog a home? Kiwi would also be happy with a foster home. Here is Kiwi's video.

About Kiwi

What life with Kiwi looks like

Kiwi is a large young adult podenco dog waiting at SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. in Germany.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Kiwi, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Kiwi?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Kiwi on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Kiwi if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Kiwi already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Kiwi isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Kiwi and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
