Klaus

German Shepherd · Male · Adult · 8 years

I am Klaus … a model student: From a suspicious dog, I became a diligent, loyal guy at the animal shelter. After an adjustment period, I show myself to be willing to learn, friendly, and obedient towards my confidants. My outgoing nature and working together make it really fun. Since I like to test things out, I am looking for a dog-experienced, consistent home. Would you like to know more about me? I used to only trust a few people. Out of insecurity, I sometimes tried to bite – especially when strangers visited. With secure, confident leadership, I can relax well and take it gratefully. Please keep in mind that I might again become jealous in my new home. We – at almost 40 kg – need to continue practicing on my leash manners. If I want to assert my stubbornness and don’t get my way, then patience is the key. I usually get myself back under control and become the Klaus who wants to be liked. I am familiar with being alone for hours, and driving as well as bus and train rides are familiar to me. I usually meet other dogs friendly, but can also be provoked by grumpy, large male dogs. I am clever: I can open doors and jump over fences – my home needs a secure, high enough fence. I wish for … loving, patient people with experience with more demanding dogs, a love for training, and plenty of mental stimulation. A quiet home without children and little visitors, preferably in a quiet or rural environment, suits me best. Then, I will be the world’s best Klaus that you can imagine. Do I fit with you? Then feel free to contact my animal caretakers at the Benji House or via the form below. I look forward to your inquiry.

About Klaus

What life with Klaus looks like

Klaus is a large adult german shepherd dog waiting at Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg in Berlin.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Can be jealous, needs secure high fencing as can jump over fences and open doors, requires quiet household without much visitor traffic

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Klaus, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Klaus?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Klaus on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Klaus if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Klaus already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Klaus isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Klaus and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
