Koko – a quiet soul who finally wants to arrive 🤍 .fusion-body .fusion-builder-column-18 > .fusion-body .fusion-flex-container .fusion-imageframe.imageframe-3 img{aspect-ratio:2 / 3;object-position:20% 38%;} .fusion-body .fusion-builder-column-19 > Aufenthaltsort: Animal Shelter in Slavonski Brod, Croatia Gender: female, neutered Date of birth: 08.2022 Height: approx. 30cm Compatibility with cats unknown Single or second dog ideal environment: rural Suitable for: dog experienced people .fusion-body .fusion-button Direct to self-disclosure .fusion-body .fusion-builder-column-20 > .fusion-body .fusion-flex-container .fusion-gallery-3 .fusion-body .fusion-builder-column-21 > .fusion-body .fusion-flex-container Some dogs storm straight into life. Others need a person who shows them calmly that they can trust again. Koko belongs to the quiet souls. The about 4 years old female dog has unfortunately not experienced a safe and loving home in her previous life. She comes from a hoarding household, where she lived with numerous dogs and cats. When the owner died, the other dogs disappeared one by one – and Koko was left behind with only a few cats for several months. When our animal protection officer learned of her, she wanted to take Koko immediately. But on the first attempt, her fear was so great that it was not possible yet. Later it finally succeeded and Koko has been living with her in safety for about two years now. Koko is making progress – small, cautious steps in her own pace. Nevertheless, she is still a very shy and traumatized dog. She does not let herself be touched or taken by herself and avoids people at first. But once she has her and the initial uncertainty is overcome, she likes to be stroked extensively. Somewhere behind all this fear is a little girl who can enjoy closeness. 🥺 We believe that Koko needs something that has been missing so far for her next big step: a real home or an experienced foster home with close family ties. A protected everyday life, fixed routines and people who do not demand anything from her, but give her the time to become bolder on her own. That's why we are looking for quiet, patient and dog-experienced people for Koko, ideally with experience with fear dogs. A sovereign existing dog could give her orientation. Koko also already knows living with cats. Due to her short legs, we wish for her a preferably ground-level home or one with very few stairs. After she has gained trust, she can also be carried. A flat in the middle of the turbulent big city life would not be the right thing for Koko. Much better would be a quiet home in a rural area, preferably with a securely fenced garden, where she can initially get to know her new world without pressure. It's not about achieving as much as possible as quickly as possible with Koko. It's about giving her security, letting trust grow and also enjoying the very small steps. For the right people, these small steps will eventually be huge. 🤍 Who not only sees Koko's fear, but the little girl behind her – and wants to show her how beautiful a home can feel? 🐾 .fusion-body .fusion-button Interest in an adoption? About Koko

What life with Koko looks like

Koko is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Nordic Strays e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Koko, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Koko?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Nordic Strays e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Koko on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Koko if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Nordic Strays e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Koko already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Koko isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Nordic Strays e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Koko and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
