Kolumbus

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 9 years

After all the paperwork was gathered and the post-check was successfully completed, Kolumbus was permanently rehomed in December 2018. We wish you a wonderful life… …………………………………………………………………………………………………………… Dogo Canarian mixed breed. My name is Kolumbus. I am male, neutered, born around 2011, and I am microchipped and vaccinated. I am approximately 65cm tall. I have been waiting for a new home since May 2016. My caretakers say about me: The Kolumbus, also known as Bussi, named after a traveler from us, was immediately clear upon surrender. He is a top-class rescue dog – meaning, he has been rescued so many times that an incident occurred where a person was harmed. To the best of our knowledge, we are handler number four, which is what is known. Kolumbus must be rehomed as a problem dog, and the danger must be proven first. If you are interested, we are happy to advise. Kolumbus is an absolutely fine fellow who did not deserve to end up in an animal shelter. If one of the previous owners had not just practiced but consistently sought professional dog training support through classes or a club, none of this would have happened, we are convinced. He shows some insecurity but is fundamentally friendly, especially towards people. Other dogs, especially the larger ones, he barks at, but we doubt that he is fundamentally incompatible with them. Like everything else, this problem was also avoided. Cats find him highly stimulating, and they should not be in the new household. Another issue are older people; for some unknown reason, they scare him, and he barks loudly and untrained to create distance. He has lived with a larger child in the household, and given his background, we would prefer a childless household. Kolumbus is house-trained, cuddly, clingy, can be left alone, is a happy passenger, and is a dog who absolutely deserves his next chance. We wish that it will be his last and best life… and that our rescue dog will be rescued one last time with our help… Update January 2017: Kolumbus was not deemed dangerous by the authorities, but due to his background, he is being rehomed with special conditions! The descriptions are impressions and photos of the animal in our animal shelter and our foster homes. Each animal can develop differently in the new home.

About Kolumbus

What life with Kolumbus looks like

Kolumbus is a medium-sized senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Schkortitz in Grimma.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Kolumbus, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Kolumbus?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Schkortitz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Kolumbus on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Kolumbus if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Schkortitz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Kolumbus already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Kolumbus isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Schkortitz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Kolumbus and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
