Laika

Belgian Malinois · Female · Young · 2 years

Malinois mixed breed Laika – seeks people with patience and understanding Laika is a young female dog who recently came to the Spanish animal shelter. The caretakers are still at the beginning of getting to know her character and needs. There are indications that Laika spent a large part of her previous life on a chain. Whether this is true, we cannot say for certain. If it is true, it would explain why many everyday things are still unfamiliar to her and why she may initially be cautious in certain situations. Laika shows initial reticence when meeting unfamiliar people. At the same time, she develops surprising trust when given time and treated respectfully. She appears curious about the world and seems ready to learn new things. Laika already enjoys walks. Many signs suggest that walking on a leash is still unfamiliar to her. At the same time, she shows little reaction to environmental stimuli. She notices people, other dogs, or passing cars without reacting in an obvious way. As a Malinois, Laika likely brings many typical traits of this special breed: intelligence, sensitivity, a willingness to learn, and the desire to work closely with her people. At the same time, Malinois are dogs that need clear structures, orientation, and a meaningful physical and mental challenge. For Laika, we wish for a home with dog-experienced people, ideally with experience with Malinois or other working breeds. She needs people who bring understanding for her uncertainties, show her the world at her own pace, and are willing to invest time in her development. We do not yet know what Laika has learned in her previous life and what experiences she brings. Prospective owners should be open to the possibility that she may need to learn and work through many things. Choosing a Malinois should always be well thought out. These dogs are often exceptionally loyal and trainable, but also place high demands on their people. Those who are aware of this responsibility and can give Laika the necessary security have the chance to accompany an impressive female dog on her journey into a new life. Laika has likely not seen much of the world. It would be wonderful if her future were to be filled with positive experiences, reliability, and genuine belonging.

About Laika

What life with Laika looks like

Laika is a large young adult belgian malinois dog waiting at SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. in Germany.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Laika, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Laika?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Laika on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Laika if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Laika already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Laika isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Laika and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
