Laika

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Adult · 8 years

Here you are... No more owner to spoil you and be with you day and night. Your owner is old and can no longer care for you. Unfortunately, none of the Laika family could take you in their family. Even if it was just to provide both owner and dog with some time together. These kind of separation dogs go right through your heart. So sad to be separated at this age. Also for the owner. Who on earth has a place for this lady whose age we estimate to be around 8 years. According to her passport, she would be a Chihuahua lady. We honestly wouldn't have thought that. How she gets along with other dogs, cats and children is not known to us, but she is intensely sweet! She carries a considerable overweight with her, which is really harmful to her health. We will start walking here carefully. A little further every day. Building up condition and good nutrition. Come on girl! We are looking for a top place for you. Oldies in an animal shelter... That's just so sad. They don't understand it. It's too busy. Too many people. Too much commotion. In short, who gives this lady a good life yet. No stress but a lot of attention and Laika will shower you with love.

About Laika

What life with Laika looks like

Laika is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at DOC Oldenzaal in Netherlands.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Laika, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Laika?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. DOC Oldenzaal handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Laika on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Laika if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — DOC Oldenzaal will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Laika already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Laika isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with DOC Oldenzaal early rather than rehoming privately; they know Laika and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
