Łajka

Female · Senior · 11 years

The story of Laika is very sad - she lived her whole life in a tent with homeless people. Unfortunately, these are not decent conditions for a person or a dog. Recently, Łajka was taken to an animal shelter and we are full of hope that in her remaining years we will find a home for her where she will experience warmth and carefree sleep. From people who know Laika, we know that she is a very polite and easygoing female dog. Besides, we ourselves can see it - she greets every person as if she had known them for years, although at first she may seem slightly shy and suspicious. Łajka walks beautifully on a leash, ignores other dogs, comes nicely when called. We are looking for a sensitive caregiver for Laika, who will take care of her, provide silence, peace, and nice, slow walks. We don't know if Laika will find herself in an apartment, or if she will have separation anxiety - she probably never lived in a house.

PL·Show original

About Łajka

What life with Łajka looks like

Łajka is a large senior dog waiting at Schronisko Na Paluchu in Warsaw.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

Note from the shelter: Senior dog who lived homeless, may have separation anxiety and difficulty adapting to indoor life

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Łajka, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Łajka?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko Na Paluchu handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Łajka on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Łajka if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko Na Paluchu will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Łajka already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Łajka isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko Na Paluchu early rather than rehoming privately; they know Łajka and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
