The James Dyson Award is an international prize - established by the inventor of the bagless vacuum cleaner - that annually rewards the most innovative inventors and projects to solve concrete and current problems. This year, it was awarded to a very young biomedical engineer from Tarragona, who has created a "domestic" alternative to breast cancer screening usually performed in hospitals and that is quite painful. To perform the screening, the Blue Box - the device, slightly larger than a box that the young researcher has developed - uses a urine sample: it performs chemical analysis of the sample and transmits the results to the cloud. The algorithm - which uses Artificial Intelligence - reacts to specific metabolites present in the urine and provides a diagnosis, detecting the first signs of the disease. Therefore, it is an economical, non-invasive, painless and non-radiating alternative, which can become part of women's daily routine. But what does the dog have to do with it? It has everything to do with it! The Spanish researcher essentially replicated what she saw a dog doing, which detected the presence of a lung tumor by sniffing the breath of the person it lived with. And thus the physiology of the dog was reproduced on an Arduino microprocessor - a hardware platform used for rapid prototyping and for hobbyist, educational and professional purposes - to design an electronic nose: and the software based on AI was also conceived to imitate the dog's sensory system, which is now associated with diagnostic capabilities of great importance for the prevention of some of the most common human diseases.

Il James Dyson Award è un premio internazionale – istituito dall’inventore dell’aspirapolvere senza sacchetto – che ogni anno premia gli inventori e i progetti più innovativi per risolvere problemi concreti e attuali. Quest'anno, è stato assegnato a una giovanissima ingegnere biomedico di Tarragona, che ha creato un'alternativa “domestica” allo screening del tumore al seno che si effettua di solito in strutture ospedaliere e che è piuttosto doloroso. Per effettuare lo screening, il Blue Box – così si chiama il dispositivo poco più grande di una scatola che la giovane ricercatrice ha messo a punto – si serve di un campione di urina: esegue l’analisi chimica del campione e trasmette i risultati al cloud. L’algoritmo – che sfrutta l'Intelligenza Artificiale – reagisce a metaboliti specifici presenti nelle urine e fornisce una diagnosi, rilevando i primi segni della malattia. Si tratta, quindi, di una alternativa economica non invasiva, indolore e non irradiante, che potrà entrare a far parte della routine quotidiana delle donne. Ma che c'entra il cane? C'entra, eccome! La ricercatrice spagnola ha sostanzialmente replicato quanto ha visto fare a un cane, che ha rilevato la presenza di un tumore al polmone annusando il respiro della persona con cui viveva. Ed è così che la fisiologia del cane è stata riprodotta sul microprocessore Arduino – una piattaforma hardware che viene usata per la prototipazione rapida e per scopi hobbistici, didattici e professionali – per ideare un naso elettronico: e anche il software basato sull’IA è stato concepito per imitare il sistema sensoriale del cane, a cui sono ormai associate capacità diagnostiche di grande importanza per la prevenzione di alcune tra le più diffuse malattie umane .
