Lara

Podenco · Female · Senior · 12 years

Lara is a beautiful, calm female dog with a great coat and very graceful demeanor. Her coat is a nice combination of white with brown-red, very impressive. She has a height of about 52 cm and weighs about 15.5 kg. Podenco Lara needed some time to adjust. She was very shy and at first didn't even dare to go into the house. Once inside, her retreat was the only place she felt safe. Now she is a cheerful mouse who is very happy with attention and food. Nevertheless, she always wants to please and doesn't like loud commands. Lara is a very affectionate mouse. When given petting, she often purrs with satisfaction. She walks perfectly on a leash and never leaves the side of her person of attachment. She is a calm, uncomplicated, friendly and gentle roommate. She gets along well with other dogs. Lara could live in a pack, but would also be happy as a single princess. She has a lot of catching up to do in terms of affection and love and demands everything she can get. She is very fond of food, so she can be trained well. She remains very quiet in her box when traveling by car, but it still stresses her, which needs to be worked on. Traveling by car without the box works better. Lara hates walks in cold weather, so they are limited to what is necessary, unless there are irresistible mouse holes somewhere that she can explore. She definitely has a strong hunting drive. Due to her age, she is calm and balanced and adapts well to the family's rhythm. She is not nocturnal and sleeps through in her safe environment. Lara was recently operated on the left mammary gland, but fortunately it was a benign tumor. Lara is not a dog for jogging or other physical activities, as she cannot be physically stressed due to her history. Walks at a relaxed pace are no problem. She could also be suitable for older people, children should be older and calmer. Lara can be left alone, the duration can be gradually increased. With a dog companion she feels safer. It would also be advantageous if her "new" people did not live too far away from the foster home, so they could visit Lara more often and get to know her and perhaps gain trust before she moves, as Lara is very attached to the foster persons and the process will certainly take time. If you are aware of the responsibility and have fallen in love with her, please contact the responsible adoption officer. Here are Lara's videos: Video 1 - Video 2 - Video 3.

DE·Show original

About Lara

What life with Lara looks like

Lara is a senior podenco dog waiting at SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. in Germany.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Lara, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Lara?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Lara on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Lara if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Lara already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Lara isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Lara and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
