Leo

German Shepherd · Male · Adult · 5 years

Leo, a 5-year-old intelligent and loyal Belgian Malinois Shepherd mix, is a partner with a strong heart and a sharp mind. (born 05.12.2020) Leo combines the best qualities of both breeds: he is loyal, eager to learn, and always attentive. As typical for a Malinois mix, Leo needs both physical and mental stimulation. He wants to be challenged and guided. To learn more about Leo's personality, he spent several weeks in a foster home outside the shelter. He knows basic commands, is house-trained, and behaves well and calmly in the house. He can stay alone for up to 6 hours, but this should be the exception. Leo loves being with his "own" person, with whom he feels safe and can trust. He tends to bond with one person at first, but doesn't reject other people in the household. However, this requires time, patience, and effort to engage with Leo, guide him, and build a trusting relationship. This commitment must be ensured by all people living together in the household. Once he has won his heart, he is a loyal and faithful partner who can also be witty and playful and loves cuddling. Racially, he reacts to movement stimuli, which is why we don't see him in a household with children and cats. Leo also shows some territorial behavior, which needs to be worked on. The more trust he gains from his humans, who can also read and understand him, the better his behavior will be. When walking, Leo shows interest in his environment and is vigilant. He masters most dog encounters well, but if he has an antipathy, he also likes to go forward. That's why Leo should always wear a muzzle and be on a leash. He is not interested in cyclists, joggers, or cars; he behaves absolutely confidently and calmly in these encounters. Only when encountering free-roaming cats or other small animals, his prey behavior is activated. Leo likes to ride in the car without problems and is used to a transport box. He is also used to a box inside the house and accepts it positively. We are looking for experienced and active people who enjoy growing and working with a dog and are able to read and understand a dog's body language. Leo needs confident people who can lead him, make decisions for him, and give him stability and structure. With Leo, you get a willing and eager to learn partner who has a lot of fun with obedience and is certainly suitable for further dog sports. Leo must not only be physically, but also mentally, exercised to be balanced. On his foster home, he was allowed to do obedience, nose work, and enjoy search games. Canicross was practiced with him, but we don't see him there because he is not the classic endurance athlete. Leo loves long walks, hikes, or a game in the large garden where he can run extensively. It makes sense for Leo to attend a dog school, especially to improve his social skills with other dogs. On his foster home, he was allowed to participate in social walks and encounter training until the end, where he improved increasingly.

About Leo

What life with Leo looks like

Leo is a large adult german shepherd dog waiting at Tierschutzverein Bad Kreuznach in Bad Kreuznach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Leo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Leo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Bad Kreuznach handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Leo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Leo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Bad Kreuznach will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Leo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Leo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Bad Kreuznach early rather than rehoming privately; they know Leo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
