URGENT FOSTER OR HOME NEEDED. Leon the Mastin-Mix, together with Maya, were brought to the shelter in a very particular way, by really strange people. Both of the dogs were heavily sedated, under drugs, apparently calming pills that the older couple had obtained from a veterinary. The dogs had to be wheeled in with carts, that's how heavily under influence they were. Aside from the fact that they were brought to the shelter in a very incorrect manner, the people then ran away, and the only piece of untrustworthy information that we have, is that apparently Maya & Leon were left at their neighbor's property. They are both huge fluffy polar bears, who love to be around humans, but at the same time are also independent enough to stay alone, or do mind their own business in the dog parks, without needing constant companionship. Leon loves to be together with volunteers, to be touched, to have attention, and to receive snacks! They both loved to be brushed and taken care of. Even though Leon is massively huge, he walks so nicely on the leash, much better than many tiny dogs. His presence is pleasant, not overwhelming, as sometimes is associated with this size of dogs. Leon is a kind and gentle giant, who is really really suffering in the shelter. His body is huge, and due to his weight, there is heavy pressure on his elbows and knees, and he spends all of his days laying on hard concrete. At the same time, we have now found out that he is positive for leishmania, which is now under treatment, and would normally not be an issue, but he is also having allergic reactions and osteoarthritis in his back legs, as big dogs usually do - the poor conditions, plus the leishmania and allergies together has caused Leon to reduce to a shadow of his might, impressive self, who he was when he first arrived…. Now Leon is sad and quiet, while Maya is cheerful and still enjoys the time with volunteers and running in the park. Maya and Leon are very similar in their appearance, so we believe they are related in some way. They care a lot for each other, groom each other and play together, though even their play is quite low-energy and calm. For Leon we are looking for a home with exterior space available - he is a big Mastin boy, and his calling is to watch over his land. Ideally Leon & Maya would find their new homes together, as they always support each other, but at the same time, Leon could potentially also be a single dog, when he would have lots of companionship from his human, or possibly also join a household with another friendly, social big female. Leon’s shoulder height is about 76-78cm, making him one of the biggest dogs you’ll meet. His Leishmaniosis is in treatment, and the shelter will continue to support all medical activities of Leon. He currently eats Hypoallergic food.
