🐈 Who can open the cans for these two young tomcats in the future? 🐾 Lars and Leon would love to stay together in their new—and hopefully final—home. Ideally, their new humans already have experience with purebred cats or are happy to learn about their specific traits and grooming needs (coat care). We hope for a spacious apartment or house for them, with secure outdoor access, a cat-proofed balcony, or an appropriately enriched indoor setup. 🚨 Important information about Persian tomcats Leon and Lars: Grooming and health status Leon and Lars are two white Persian tomcats with the breed-typical very dense, long fur. Anyone choosing these cats consciously commits to regular, thorough grooming and close veterinary supervision. The coat—especially Leon’s—is extremely dense and long. Superficial brushing isn’t enough; the fur must be thoroughly combed down to the skin on a regular basis. Certain areas should always be kept short: belly, anal/genital region, base of the tail, behind the ears, and between the paw pads. Keeping these spots trimmed is essential. A small, quiet clipper is suitable and sensible for this task. Scissors can also be used, but only with great caution, as the skin is very thin and easily injured. Without consistent care, the fur will mat completely, often leaving full-body shaving under anesthesia as the only option. Maintaining the coat at a manageable half-length through ongoing grooming is therefore a far better solution. There are now professional services available for routine Persian cat grooming—for example, at VET Praxis für Kleintiere. Additionally, numerous reliable grooming tutorials can be found on Instagram or YouTube. We will of course personally demonstrate the proper techniques and required tools. Essential equipment includes a sturdy metal comb, a high-quality slicker brush, a small quiet clipper, and appropriate nail clippers. Nail care is especially important for Persians. In particular, the dewclaws on the front paws grow significantly and need regular trimming. All other nails also require ongoing monitoring and clipping. Leon has undergone dental treatment. During this, he was diagnosed with Feline Odontoclastic Resorptive Lesions (FORL), a painful and progressive condition. His teeth should be checked approximately every six months, and further dental procedures are highly likely to be needed. Additionally, Leon shows spinal changes consistent with spondylosis. These changes can be painful. He is currently receiving pain medication to stabilize his quality of life. Long-term pain management is both possible and advisable with this diagnosis, provided the medication remains effective and well tolerated. Regular veterinary follow-ups are crucial to monitor efficacy and dosage, adjusting as needed. Since long-term use of pain medication can strain the liver and kidneys, periodic blood tests are also recommended at appropriate intervals. Bloodwork has already revealed a slightly elevated long-term kidney value, though other kidney parameters remain within normal range for now. Again, regular monitoring is vital to detect any developments early. Lars is the more lively and outgoing of the two. His coat is slightly shorter but still very dense. The same grooming principles apply to him as well. He requires dental treatment, which will still be performed by us. Currently, he shows no obvious signs of pain. Both tomcats have undergone cardiological exams and echocardiograms. Nevertheless, Persian cats often carry genetic predispositions. Anyone adopting Leon and Lars knowingly takes on responsibility for regular vet visits, structured grooming routines, and corresponding financial planning. Pet insurance—or at least surgical coverage—is strongly recommended. While pre-existing conditions may be excluded, insurance still protects against potentially high future costs, especially since the cats are no longer very young. These two tomcats need people who understand that grooming, monitoring, and veterinary care will be a fixed part of daily life. Only then can they remain stable and avoid returning to the condition they were in when they first arrived at our shelter. About Leon

What life with Leon looks like

Leon is a large adult mixed breed cat waiting at Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) in Germany.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Leon, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Leon?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Leon on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Leon if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Leon already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Leon isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Leon and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
