Leon

Mixed Breed · Unknown

León the gentle boy urgently needs sponsors! Unfortunately, not much is known about León's past; only that his life likely didn't have a good start. The male dog was found wandering as a puppy in the middle of a busy street, where he was at risk of being run over. An animal welfare worker discovered León wandering and caught him. Since then, León has lived in the animal shelter and has been waiting for his people for several years. León is more of a shy dog, but once he trusts you, he shows his endless gratitude and his loving, gentle nature. He is delighted by every bit of attention he gets at the animal shelter. Unfortunately, León has inactive leishmaniasis, which is treated four times a year with Leishguard syrup. Additionally, León was diagnosed with Cushing's syndrome (hyperadrenocorticism). In Cushing's syndrome, the adrenal cortex secretes too much cortisol. León is currently being treated with Vetoryl, a medication used for hyperadrenocorticism. Regular monitoring of his liver and kidneys by the vet is also necessary. Liver enzymes, electrolytes, urea, and creatinine values must be checked regularly. León's illness incurs high costs, and that's why he is urgently in need of sponsors. Due to his illness, León has a short life expectancy, and the animal caretakers at the shelter make his short life as beautiful as possible. Additionally, León requires very expensive special food and supplements. If stressors were to persist, additional cortisol would be secreted, and León's condition would rapidly change. Any new changes in León's life would cause stress, so a relocation at the moment is not possible. We urgently need sponsors for León so that he can spend the rest of his dog life in his familiar environment among his fur-nosed friends and trusted caretakers. This is a young, adolescent dog.

About Leon

What life with Leon looks like

Leon is a extra-large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein Europa in München.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Leon, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Leon?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Europa handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Leon on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Leon if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Europa will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Leon already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Leon isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Europa early rather than rehoming privately; they know Leon and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
