Levy

German Shepherd · Male · Young · 3 years

Caution with strangers - generally friendly towards referential people - only to dog-experienced individuals in the area of aggression and prey-catching problems - will only be rehomed as a single dog - not for children, cats, or small animals - muzzle and leash required Levy came to us as a security measure from an animal shelter after a serious biting incident with his owners. He has been with us for a year and has made great progress this year. Daily training and a structured, clear daily routine have transformed Levy into almost a "normal" German Shepherd. The male dog still understands his genetics quite primitively and behaves accordingly. What makes a German Shepherd? He is very reactive, needs clear tasks, or else he gets lost in his environment. He is loyal to his referential people and can get along with everyone else. He speaks a clear language where aggressive behavior is part of it. He expects to be treated with respect. If you are looking for German Shepherd drill and strict formalism, you are at the wrong place with Levy, even though he can do tricks like giving paws, sit, and down very well. Levy had a strong compulsion to search for, dig, and fix stones and inanimate objects and was unable to do normal walks or simply "dog things" like playing, sniffing, or making contact. Through an exclusion and intensive training, Levy now walks well on a leash and is approachable. We are currently working on free-running and communication with other dogs. He is not a dog that can be left in the garden or on a free run, as he will quickly fall back into his old patterns. Levy needs concrete addressing from his human and is very good at it and ready for cooperation. He has a muzzle and leash requirement. The muzzle must be worn in public and we generally recommend handling with Levy. Additionally, a kennel or dog room is recommended for Levy, as he needs a low-stimulus space to switch off and be alone. We have had very good experiences with Levy. The balance between a lot of quiet time to process everything and targeted training has already made great progress with Levy. Levy now goes for walks with two experienced handlers and can now enjoy longer excursions. Until he finds a home, we are happy to have people who want to take on a sponsorship for our Levy.

About Levy

What life with Levy looks like

Levy is a extra-large young adult german shepherd dog waiting at Tierheim Hamburg in Hamburg.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Requires muzzle and leash mandate, history of severe biting incident, compulsive behaviors, needs structured training, must be only dog, experienced handler required for aggression issues

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Levy, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Levy?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Hamburg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Levy on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Levy if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Hamburg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Levy already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Levy isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Hamburg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Levy and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
