Cujo

German Shepherd · Male · Adult · 5 years

Characteristics: Cujo was brought to the animal shelter and we know nothing about his background. The handsome male dog arrived completely frightened and overwhelmed by the situation, having been abandoned cruelly. Initially, he was ready to defend his life and showed offensive aggression towards people. Now, he is absolutely friendly and cuddly with familiar people. With strangers, he is initially suspicious, especially with men, but warms up quickly once he realizes there’s nothing to fear from them. It seems that Cujo didn’t have much environmental experience in his previous life. Therefore, he acts very cautiously in many things. We assume that he has lived outdoors so far. In indoor spaces, he feels uncomfortable at first but also makes progress, exploring his surroundings bravely. Cujo is a very special dog for us! He has worked so well with our trainer Manuela Habermann and has continued to develop, showing a willingness to learn new things and giving us a lot of trust. Therefore, we are looking for people who are ready to understand and approach him, who will stick with him through thick and thin, accept his boundaries, and never work under pressure. If you are ready to commit, you will get a wonderful, playful companion who looks to you for guidance and is ready to explore the world with you. Cujo needs the option to go outside at all times in the beginning, as well as a lot of contact with his people, because he is a real cuddler. The German Shepherd-Kangal-mixed-breed male dog shows territorial behavior. Therefore, it should be possible to separate him from visitors. With other dogs, Cujo is open and gets along with them depending on their affinity. Upon arrival at the animal shelter, Cujo showed an unusual gait and was therefore completely orthopedically examined, including a CT. He has spondylosis in the lumbar vertebrae area and mild hip dysplasia on the left side, as well as bilateral elbow arthritis. In addition to medication, we are currently ensuring muscle building with physiotherapeutic exercises. Interested parties will be informed about further therapy and the possibility of a foster care arrangement.

About Cujo

What life with Cujo looks like

Cujo is a large adult german shepherd dog waiting at Tierheim Kaiserslautern in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Cujo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Cujo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Kaiserslautern handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Cujo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Cujo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Kaiserslautern will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Cujo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Cujo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Kaiserslautern early rather than rehoming privately; they know Cujo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
