Adopt Lili

Yorkshire Terrier · Female · Adult · 8 years

Lili is a charming 8-year-old Yorkshire terrier who came to our animal shelter when her previous family was expecting a baby. The changes in the family made it difficult to give her the attention and guidance she needs, so they decided to look for a new home for her. Lili is a dog with a clear personality. In her previous home, she did not always receive the right structure and boundaries, which sometimes makes her tend to "claim" people. When she gets jealous or feels she has to share attention, she can become aggressive. Therefore, we are looking for an owner who can be calm, consistent, and clear with her. However, with the right guidance and clear boundaries, Lili can adapt well and shows her nice side. Outside, Lili is a real walking companion. She clearly enjoys her walks and likes to go out. She loves exploring her surroundings and enjoys being on the move with her owner. She can also stay alone at home, although this needs to be gradually built up in a new environment. At first, she may bark a bit when left alone, but with a good buildup and clear routine, she can definitely learn to overcome this. Lili also has incontinence. She receives medication for this, and it is currently under control. It will remain something she has to deal with, so future owners should take this into account. Lili is therefore a dog that thrives best with people who can offer her clear structure, calmness, and boundaries. When she has this support, she can be a very pleasant and loyal companion. Without this guidance, she quickly takes control, which is actually confusing for her. When she arrived at the animal shelter, Lili's teeth were not in good condition. She has already seen our vet and had her teeth treated, so she can now be comfortable again. We are looking for a warm home for Lili where she will be understood and given the right guidance. In the right hands, she can grow into a very nice and loyal dog.

About Lili

What life with Lili looks like

Lili is a small adult yorkshire terrier dog waiting at Dierenbescherming Mechelen in Mechelen.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇧🇪Adopting from Belgium

Belgian shelters operate under regional law (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels each have their own rules). All adoptions include the Eurochip, vaccinations, and a stewardship contract. Several Flemish shelters partner with Dutch and German rescue networks.

Frequently asked

Adopting Lili, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Lili?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierenbescherming Mechelen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Lili on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Lili if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierenbescherming Mechelen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Lili already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Lili isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierenbescherming Mechelen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Lili and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
