Adopt Lizzie

Mixed Breed · Female · Puppy · 8 months

The cute Lizzie is just over 8 months old – and as befits such a young puppy, she is still very playful, happy, exuberant, and full of energy, but also super sweet, loving, and clingy. Lizzie loves attention, physical contact, and cuddles more than anything! She gets along famously with her fellow animals, and in the animal shelter, she lives together with other dogs in a run. When Lizzie meets new people, she can initially be a bit reserved and shy. But if given some time and not pressured, her insecurity fades quickly and the playful puppy comes back. Once Lizzie has built trust, she seeks physical contact, leans into “her” people, and asks for cuddles. For Lizzie, we are looking for an adventure-loving family that enjoys showing her the world. A nice only dog is welcome, as well as dog-experienced older children. Whether Lizzie could share her home with a cat would need to be tested if there is interest. After observing for a longer period, it was noticed on site that she sometimes walks a bit oddly after playing and running around. X-rays have now revealed that Lizzie has old, already fully healed fractures in her hind legs. We do not know how this happened – perhaps as a puppy on the street through a car or she was stepped on… It is not noticeable in principle, and she plays and runs normally. But we want to address this honestly. We assume that she can lead a normal dog life…only big bike tours might not be optimal.

About Lizzie

What life with Lizzie looks like

Lizzie is a medium-sized puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Hundehilfe Portugal in Speyer.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Lizzie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Lizzie?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hundehilfe Portugal handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Lizzie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Lizzie if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hundehilfe Portugal will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Lizzie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Lizzie isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hundehilfe Portugal early rather than rehoming privately; they know Lizzie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
