Lou

Labrador Retriever · Unknown

I am a black Labrador Shepherd mix, approximately one and a half years old. I may look tough, but I am really a very sweet cuddle bug. I love attention and I love being with you. However, I find new things a bit scary at first. I need some time to see who you are and if I can trust you. Once I get used to you, my sweet and affectionate side comes out more and more. I ended up at the animal shelter after being brought in by the animal ambulance. Unfortunately, no one has claimed me yet. That's why I am now looking for a new home where I can stay forever. I still have a lot to learn. I am still a young dog who has to discover everything. That's why I'm looking for a person who likes to work with me and teach me things in a calm and positive way that I don't know yet. I am a bit of a submissive type, both to people and to other dogs. I want to do well and I'm not a dog that wants to be the boss. I am also very enthusiastic on the leash and still pull, so that's something I need to learn. I get along well with other dogs. A stable dog friend in my new house would be great. I can learn from them and it will give me more confidence. Because I can sometimes be quite clumsy and enthusiastic, I think a house with small children is not a good combination. I mean well, but before you know it, I run someone over without realizing it! We don't know yet if I can stay home alone. That will need to be built up and tried out calmly. So I'm looking for someone who doesn't expect me to be able to do everything already, but who wants to give me the time and guidance to grow into the nice dog I have inside. Give me a little patience, clarity, love and especially a golden bed... and I will give you lots of hugs in return!

About Lou

What life with Lou looks like

Lou is a medium-sized adult labrador retriever dog waiting at Dierencentrum De Mère in Netherlands.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Lou, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Lou?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierencentrum De Mère handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Lou on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Lou if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierencentrum De Mère will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Lou already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Lou isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierencentrum De Mère early rather than rehoming privately; they know Lou and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
