Adopt Luca

Male · Adult · 5 years

Luca is a 5 year old terrier who truly embodies the classic terrier spirit. He loves playing with his toys, following his nose on exciting scents and happily digging or rolling around when given the chance. Luca is a fun, intelligent boy who enjoys engaging both his body and his mind. He is currently in foster care.Luca is looking for a calm, understanding home where he can continue the positive progress he has already made with the team here at the centre and with his foster parents. His ideal home would be a quieter household with no more than two or three people and no other pets. This environment will help Luca settle, feel secure and build confidence as he gets used to his new routine.Luca can feel worried around other dogs and unfamiliar people, and he values having his own space where he can relax and decompress. Our team has been working closely with him, teaching him valuable skills to help him regulate his emotions and cope better in situations he finds challenging. To set Luca up for success, his new family will be required to attend multiple visits at the centre. These visits will help Luca gradually build a positive relationship with his adopters and allow our team to guide you through the training and strategies he has learned. To help manage his anxieties, Luca is currently on long term behaviour medication, which his new family will need to continue under veterinary supervision.Luca promises to make you laugh and will be an incredibly rewarding companion for the right home. He is a very smart boy who learns new tricks quickly, and ongoing training, enrichment and mental stimulation will be key in helping him build confidence and feel fulfilled. An adopter with previous terrier experience would be a real bonus, as Luca definitely has all the classic terrier traits and quirks. He also loves pottering around in the garden, so if you enjoy gardening and would like a little companion to keep you company, Luca might be the right dog for you!If you feel you could offer Luca the calm, patient home he needs, please register your interest to find out more. About Luca

What life with Luca looks like

Luca is a adult dog waiting at National Animal Welfare Trust in Watford.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Luca, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Luca?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. National Animal Welfare Trust handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Luca on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Luca if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — National Animal Welfare Trust will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Luca already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Luca isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with National Animal Welfare Trust early rather than rehoming privately; they know Luca and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
