Lucera

Podenco · Female · Senior · 11 years

Lucera - a quiet heart seeks people with special understanding. Lucera is an 11-year-old Podenco whose gentleness deeply touches. In June 2025 she came to our Spanish animal shelter - handed in by her owner, a hunter, who simply left her after years of loyal service. Lucera was lucky to leave all that behind. She was able to travel to a foster home in Germany, where she is cared for and loved with great devotion today. She can finally sleep softly and feels the care and attention of her foster family every day. However, the years of neglect have left their marks. Unfortunately, Lucera is seriously ill - a consequence of her past, which even the greatest care cannot undo. She has cancer and is being treated by a veterinarian. She needs a stable, quiet environment as well as people who accompany her with empathy and give her security. Lucera is a calm, delicate and very friendly dog who gets along well with both people and other dogs. She is one of the dogs that do not demand much and enjoy the small things in everyday life quietly. For Lucera, we wish a home full of heart, peace and understanding - a place where she can just be. Take a moment to decide whether you want to give a dog from the animal protection a home. Love at first sight is an essential aspect, but it should not be the only reason for the decision. Lucera will place her faithful dog's heart in your hands and her trust in people must not be disappointed again. Adopting an animal protection dog always means taking on a special responsibility and can also become a challenge. The dogs bring a backpack of past experiences or unlearned situations with them and need time to adjust to their new life. If you are seriously interested in adopting Lucera, please contact the responsible mediator of SALVA Dog Help. The contact details are below.

About Lucera

What life with Lucera looks like

Lucera is a large senior podenco dog waiting at SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. in Germany.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Lucera, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Lucera?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Lucera on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Lucera if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Lucera already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Lucera isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Lucera and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
