Adopt Monti

Podenco · Male · Young · 1 year

prey drive, unsure in new situations, still stressed by car rides, Monti is an approximately one-year-old Podenco male dog with a special appearance: His coat is rough on his back and streaked with white hairs, while the rest of his body is smooth – a little stunner with a lot of charm. Monti was found together with another Podenco at an abandoned rest stop in the winter. The two fed off the last scraps from trash cans and sought shelter from the cold, huddled together in the rain in front of a camper. At first, he shows himself cautiously and shyly. New situations unsettle him initially, as he hasn't had much to learn about yet. But if given time and shown patience, he warms up quickly. Once Monti has developed trust, he becomes an attached companion, seeking the company of his people and clearly enjoying cuddles. He is a sensitive, very people-oriented and rather submissive dog who accepts boundaries well and strongly aligns with his primary caregiver. Outdoors, he already runs nicely on a leash and curiously explores his surroundings. If he gets scared or strangers or other dogs approach him, he sometimes reacts with barking out of insecurity. With clear commands, however, he can be brought out of the situation, and this behavior is becoming less frequent. Typical Podenco, a little, cheerful goblin is tucked into Monti: He is active, full of movement, and wants to experience much more. With other dogs, he is very compatible and loves to run and play with them. Despite his energy, he already calms down at home, knows his resting spot, can be directed there, and is also accustomed to a crate. With house training, it already works very well with regular walks. For Monti, we wish for empathetic people with patience who can give him security and joy in discovering the world together with him. With the right guidance, Monti will become a faithful, loving companion for life.

About Monti

What life with Monti looks like

Monti is a medium-sized young adult podenco dog waiting at 4animals e.V. — Hundeauffangstation HASt in Essen.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Monti, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Monti?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. 4animals e.V. — Hundeauffangstation HASt handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Monti on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Monti if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — 4animals e.V. — Hundeauffangstation HASt will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Monti already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Monti isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with 4animals e.V. — Hundeauffangstation HASt early rather than rehoming privately; they know Monti and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
