Lucky

Border Collie · Male · Adult · 5 years

Description of the animal shelter / foster home Lucky was handed over to the association "Colly in Need" due to overload. As he had several owners, it is unfortunately unclear how old the medium-sized neutered male dog is. He is estimated to be 4-8 years old and is said to be a mix between a Yellow Lab and a Border Collie. Since May 2021 he has been in our pension, and since then he has learned a lot. He ignores other dogs. In the past, Lucky had a big problem with all approaching people. In daily handling we work intensively with him on this. In the free run he tried to control fast or smaller dogs. In the dog group, Lucky now behaves very well, he only shows his urge to regulate and cover dogs in dynamic situations - when allowed. With new dogs he behaves well under guidance. He can run daily in the familiar dog group here. Lucky is a dog that needs to be occupied, he is smart and learns quickly. Running alongside the bicycle gives him pleasure. He learns tricks quickly, generally he can be very well motivated with food. Initially his motto was "Attack is the best defense", but now he leaves the decision to us. We naturally decide to greet and pass by strangers. In dealing with outside and moving people he has become much more relaxed. If something becomes too much for him, he can be taken out of the conflict by addressing him and a Plan B (for example, demanding a command he knows). We are now at a point where even our 17-year-old intern can go for a walk with him without major problems (we are of course there). Lucky needs a person who understands how dogs communicate and who gives him leadership in difficult situations for Lucky. He finds access to new people faster, which was not always the case. Once he knows a person, there are no more problems. Food allergies are not known. He is vaccinated and microchipped and has an EU pet passport. Being alone is no problem for him. Small animals should not live in his new home. For Lucky we wish a new home with people who want to work further with him and preferably live in a rural area.

About Lucky

What life with Lucky looks like

Lucky is a small adult border collie dog waiting at Initiative Border Collie in Not in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Lucky, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Lucky?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Initiative Border Collie in Not handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Lucky on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Lucky if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Initiative Border Collie in Not will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Lucky already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Lucky isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Initiative Border Collie in Not early rather than rehoming privately; they know Lucky and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
