Ludwig

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 2 years

Ludwig is a dog who touches hearts: a big, gentle giant who, after a hard past, is finally ready to arrive somewhere. At roughly 2–3 years old and an impressive 78 cm at the shoulder, he has not only presence but also a deep kindness that is immediately noticeable. He was rescued from the Husi kill shelter in Romania and, despite everything, shows trust, calmness, and a fine sense for people. Ludwig moves freely within the shelter, because tight kennels place a heavy burden on him, and he already knows how to walk on a leash. His temperament is typical of a livestock guardian dog: self-assured, watchful, and independent, yet loyal when he feels safe and understood. For this special dog, we are looking exclusively for people who can provide him with a life that suits his nature: a home with a large, securely fenced property, plenty of space, clear structure, and a calm environment. Equally important is genuine experience with livestock guardian dogs, people who know, respect, and appreciate his kind. Patience, competence, and a warm heart are the foundation on which Ludwig can build trust. Whoever can give him this home will gain an impressive companion who enriches every day with his calmness and strength. Ludwig is neutered and will be vaccinated, microchipped, and placed with a protection contract following a positive pre-adoption check. General note about our dogs: Our dogs in Romania are visited regularly so that we can reassess their behavior and development again and again. These personal impressions help us greatly in conveying as accurate a picture as possible of each individual dog. However, we would like to point out that a dog may show himself differently in a new environment, with new people, new routines, and new impressions. This is completely normal and part of every process of change. Many dogs open up even faster in a home and reveal sides that were not visible at the shelter at all. Our assessments are therefore based on current observations, but they are not a guarantee of any particular behavior in the new environment. They are meant to give orientation and show how the dog presents himself at the shelter, and what potential lies within him. We are convinced that with patience, understanding, and a loving environment, every dog can find his way and continue to develop positively.

About Ludwig

What life with Ludwig looks like

Ludwig is an extra-large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Vierbeiner in Not e.V. in Germany.

A young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ludwig, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ludwig?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Vierbeiner in Not e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ludwig on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ludwig if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Vierbeiner in Not e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Ludwig already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ludwig isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Vierbeiner in Not e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ludwig and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
