Lukas, Collie mix, ca.12 years! A sad story of an old Collie! Hello, I am Lukas, I am an old Collie mix. For many years, I lived in my family and now, as I have grown old and have problems with my age, they have left me in the woods. I became a nuisance to them because I can no longer run as fast and sometimes need more rest than I did when I was young. For many years, I faithfully accompanied my people and stood by them, and now, when I needed them the most, they got rid of me. At first, I thought we were going on a trip, but something was different, then I understood, they wanted to get rid of me..... At a lonely place, they left me in the woods. Can you imagine how I felt? I wandered for days, hungry, alone, and afraid, until people found me and brought me to the animal shelter. Here, I wait for people who will take me despite my hip problems and love me, even though I am no longer a young dog. I am loving and clingy, if you lift me into the car, I also travel with. At the moment, car rides still scare me a little because I think I will be taken away again. A quiet home without small children would be nice. And I can no longer climb stairs well, a house with a garden would be my dream. Who will give me a new home and love me despite my age. Do I still have a chance or is the animal shelter my last station????? Lukas is dead, he did not make it. He was found too late, he was hungry and had no strength left. He crossed the rainbow bridge. Lukas died alone in the animal shelter, abandoned by everything he had loved until then. He went over the rainbow bridge and no longer felt any pain. Lukas was a true friend, giving you unconditional love, following you everywhere, accompanying your life, sharing your worries, comforting you in your sorrow, standing by your side for 12 years, and as a thank you, you got rid of me because I had grown old and my joints had weakened. I would have still needed you, but you abandoned me and accepted my cruel end. The most despicable way to get rid of a dog in old age is what Lukas experienced. Such a deed only provokes disgust and deepest contempt. He was abandoned! Lukas died in the animal shelter, abandoned by everything he had loved. He crossed the rainbow bridge and no longer felt any pain.

Heidi Jostschulte

About Lukas

What life with Lukas looks like

Lukas is a senior collie dog waiting at Collies suchen ein Zuhause in Oldenburg.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Lukas, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Lukas?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Collies suchen ein Zuhause handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Lukas on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Lukas if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Collies suchen ein Zuhause will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Lukas already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Lukas isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Collies suchen ein Zuhause early rather than rehoming privately; they know Lukas and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
