Adopt Luke

Male · Senior · 9 years

Luke is a stately Dalmatian male dog born in April 2017. He came from an official pick-up under the State Security Act and has not always had the best experiences in his previous life. However, his development is impressive: With the help of an experienced dog trainer, he was successfully resocialized and now shows how much potential he has. Under clear, sovereign leadership, Luke is a reliable and pleasant companion. Due to his background, he must still be on a double leash and wear a muzzle in public—both of which he is familiar with and accepts well. For dog-experienced people who enjoy working with a sensitive, willing-to-learn dog and continue to give him stability and orientation, an ideal home would be quiet and structured. To help the transition into his new life, the future owners will receive three training sessions with the dog trainer who already knows and accompanies Luke. This will optimally support the new human-dog team.

About Luke

What life with Luke looks like

Luke is a large senior dog waiting at Landestierschutzverein Steiermark in Graz.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

Note from the shelter: Must wear a muzzle and be walked on a double leash in public areas due to his background under state security law. Requires experienced handling.

🇦🇹Adopting from Austria

Austrian shelters follow the federal Tierschutzgesetz framework: adopters sign a Schutzvertrag (protection contract) committing to the animal's welfare. Spay/neuter, microchip, and vaccinations are included; fees typically range €150–€350.

Frequently asked

Adopting Luke, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Luke?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Landestierschutzverein Steiermark handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Luke on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Luke if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Landestierschutzverein Steiermark will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Luke already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Luke isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Landestierschutzverein Steiermark early rather than rehoming privately; they know Luke and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
