Mae

Mixed Breed · Female · Senior · 12 years

COULD YOU HOLD SENIOR MAE’S PAW THROUGH THE DARKEST CHAPTER OF HER LIFE? Imagine spending 6 years as the absolute centre of someone’s world. 6 years of keeping your beloved owner’s feet warm, listening to her voice, and being her constant shadow. Then, slowly, things change. The lady you love forgets she already fed you, so she feeds you again. The walks stop, but you don’t mind, because you just want to be near her. And then, one day, she goes away and she doesn’t come back. This is the heartbreaking reality for sweet senior Mae. Her beloved mum has sadly had to move into a nursing home due to severe dementia. Mae has been left behind in an empty house, surrounded by familiar scents but totally alone. Her mum’s son visits every single day to feed her and take her out, but the house now has to be sold to cover care costs. The family aren’t able to keep her. To make matters worse, Mae’s original rescue is unable to fulfil their rescue backup. Mae is currently living entirely alone in that quiet house. She must be so terribly confused, wondering where her mummy is, and why the home they shared is slowly packing up around her. We have been asked if we could help, and how could we refuse? God bless her, just look at that little grey face and sad soulful eyes! We desperately need to find her a calm, loving foster or forever home before she has to come into rescue. Putting a confused, grieving senior, who is used to a quiet home, into a kennel environment would break her spirit. Mae is Incredibly sweet, gentle, and easy-going and we have been told she has no health issues. She loves human attention and affection and she is low energy. Mae is currently quite overweight (likely from her loving mum forgetting she’d already fed her), so she doesn’t need or want long, exhausting walks. She walks beautifully on the lead. We are looking for a calm, quiet household where someone is around for most of the day. A secure garden with a nice lawn is a must, she would love nothing more than to sit outside in the sunshine and enjoy the fresh air. Mae would be blissfully happy as an only dog to soak up all the love, but she could also live with another friendly, calm, older dog who matches her gentle pace. Just look at those big, soulful eyes, she has so much love left to give. Mae didn’t choose this heartbreak, but we can choose to give her a beautiful final chapter. If you have a quiet rural/semi rural home, a soft bed, and a heart big enough to heal a grieving senior dog, get in please get in touch As you can imagine, each one of our dogs is very precious to us, they haven’t had the best start in life and therefore it is absolutely crucial we find the right homes for them. When you complete a registration form, please tell us as much as you can about why you are looking to adopt a dog and how you think you can meet their needs. Every dog is an individual and our amazing rehoming team will know exactly what type of home each dog needs to thrive. For example, will the dog cope with a small garden or is it the type of dog who needs to live in a rural environment? Will the dog enjoy being around children, or is it best suited to an adult only home? Will it cope sharing a home with other pets, or is it best as an only dog? Are you outdoorsy types who like to go hiking, or would you prefer a dog who is happy to snuggle up on the sofa with you? Our rehoming team will be very familiar with the needs of each of our dogs and the information you provide on your application form will help them to match you with the right dog. If you’ve got any questions or would like to learn more about 1 Dog At A Time Rescue, feel free to get in touch.

About Mae

What life with Mae looks like

Mae is a large senior mixed breed dog waiting at 1 Dog At A Time Rescue UK in United Kingdom.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mae, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mae?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. 1 Dog At A Time Rescue UK handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mae on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mae if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — 1 Dog At A Time Rescue UK will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mae already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mae isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with 1 Dog At A Time Rescue UK early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mae and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (the shelter's own language). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
