Mara

Chihuahua · Female · Adult · 5 years

Mara is a small Chihuahua with sad eyes and a difficult past. She comes from a ruthless breeding station in Andalusia, where she was exploited for years as a breeding machine. She knew no love, no closeness, or freedom - she lived isolated in a kennel and was only a means to an end. But the tide has turned: on her North Bavarian foster home, the delicate Chihuahua dog is making gentle progress. Since life in the house was completely new to her, she sometimes still appears shy and uncertain. Under her caution, however, a curious heart beats, which wants to trust urgently. Her foster mother follows her faithfully, sleeps a lot in cozy dog beds and wags her tail wildly when spoken to lovingly. Only lifting her up still scares the little mouse - she becomes stiff. Her past has left scars on her soul, which can now heal in peace. Mara will probably never be a daredevil - but she has the potential to become a wonderful companion. For this sensitive treasure, we are looking for a quiet, understanding home with people who have a lot of heart, patience and sensitivity, who do not initially make any demands on her. Since Mara is very tolerant and her small, quiet fur friends give her great security, she will not be placed as a single dog. A confident, gentle first dog or a small, harmonious pack without a lot of fuss is a firm requirement for her.

About Mara

What life with Mara looks like

Mara is a medium-sized adult chihuahua dog waiting at Franz von Assisi Hundenothilfe e.V. (Hunde ohne Lobby) in Vilseck.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mara, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mara?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Franz von Assisi Hundenothilfe e.V. (Hunde ohne Lobby) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mara on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mara if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Franz von Assisi Hundenothilfe e.V. (Hunde ohne Lobby) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Mara already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mara isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Franz von Assisi Hundenothilfe e.V. (Hunde ohne Lobby) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mara and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
