MARA

Mixed Breed · Female · Young · 3 years

Mara, a female dog estimated to have been born in September 2023, is a friendly, relaxed, thoughtful, but also active, curious, people-oriented, affectionate, family-friendly, older children-friendly, female dog. She is always looking for a new home. Animal shelter manager Kata is repeatedly contacted by animal rights activists who are looking for places for dogs from killing stations or animal shelters that have no possibility of placing the dogs abroad. And in Hungary itself, there are only limited chances for the dogs to find a nice home. This was also the case again in August 2026, and Kata was asked if she could not take in 2 dogs from another station. Kata could not say no, and so Mara, one of the two, came to the shelter. The female dog was found on the street - more is not known about her history. The charming Mara is no daredevil, but acts thoughtfully and rather cautiously. But of course, she is happy when she is taken out of the kennel and is then also active and curious. She still needs to practice walking properly on a leash and learn the entire dog 1x1. Overall, however, she makes a rather relaxed and so far uncomplicated impression. Mara also gets along well with her fellow dogs. As in the previous station, she is now again housed with a male dog in a kennel and the two get along wonderfully. As shown in the video, she met a cat while on a walk, which was a bit suspicious to her, but she behaved friendly-reticent. If the cat would run away, it could, but it doesn't have to, that she would chase after it. The dear Mara would actually fit into any household, as long as she gets a lot of attention and affection. After her acclimatization, she will certainly also enjoy nice excursions and small adventures, of course with subsequent cuddle times :-). Mara moves in castrated, chipped, vaccinated, dewormed and with an EU pet passport to her new home. Has this charming lady won your heart? Then we look forward to your message! About MARA

What life with MARA looks like

MARA is a medium-sized young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Pfotenretter Ungarn in Pfotenretter.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇨🇭Adopting from Switzerland

Swiss shelters require a home visit (Platzkontrolle) and proof of suitable accommodation. Cantons each have their own additional dog-keeping requirements (e.g. SKN training in some areas). Animals leave sterilized and chipped.

Frequently asked

Adopting MARA, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about MARA?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Pfotenretter Ungarn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw MARA on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt MARA if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Pfotenretter Ungarn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is MARA already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if MARA isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Pfotenretter Ungarn early rather than rehoming privately; they know MARA and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
