Adopt Mare

European Shorthair · Female · Adult · 3 years

Mare is a young kitten about 3 years old, who came in as a stray. What she has been through, we don't know, but it's clear that she's not used to people much. Now that she's been here for a while, she's becoming more and more confident and we're seeing more of the real Mare. A young, energetic and playful girl, who combines a gentle character with a tough and independent streak. Mare does her best work at the window. She greets all new customers from her fixed spot in the scratching post, peeks at them and enjoys it when they talk back and give her attention. And even when we come into the room, we can count on her enthusiasm. Until we want to touch her, madam clearly needs more than just some flirting through the window and a nice treat. And who could blame her! For her, we are looking for a quiet household of 1 or 2 people who want to become her best friend. We'll see how she gets along with people further, but how far she will go is hard to predict. Either way, you'll have a real personality with her in your home, which is also lovely to flirt with from a distance. We actually see her making little contact with the other cats and think she would be fine as the only cat. Mare has had stomach problems and receives special hypoallergenic food for that. With this, she's doing much better and will need this for the rest of her life. She loves it, so don't worry. Do you have a quiet household and plenty of space for her? And do you think something could blossom between you two? Then come and take a look at her (by the window)!

About Mare

What life with Mare looks like

Mare is a adult european shorthair cat waiting at Dierenasiel Utrecht in Utrecht.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mare, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mare?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierenasiel Utrecht handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mare on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mare if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierenasiel Utrecht will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mare already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mare isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierenasiel Utrecht early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mare and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
