Adopt Mars

Podenco · Male · Puppy

07 april 2026: reserved via animal shelter animal shelter ASAP (Alhama Street Animal Protection): Input 20 maart 2026: Clara was found on 23 december 2025 by Sarah and Mike, somewhere near their house in Huétor-Tájar (a small village in the province of Granada). As she was wandering around, it was also unclear where she came from. Sarah and Mike took her in, hungry and scared, and gave her good food and a warm bed. In January they took her to the veterinarian and there their suspicion about her condition was confirmed. Clara was (highly) pregnant. There was no trace of the father, but he was probably also a podenco. On 25 januari, 9 pups were born: 7 males and 2 females. The females are going to Finland for adoption in may and Clara is allowed to stay living with Sarah and Mike. They all received their first vaccination on 9 march, they will receive their second vaccination on 30 march. The third vaccination, together with their passport, chip and rabies vaccination, is scheduled for 25 april and then they would be allowed to travel abroad from 16 may. They are not yet on a leash, because with so many pups it's quite chaotic and difficult. But they are growing up in a household with multiple dogs and cats, where everyone gets along well. They have not yet come into contact with children. More information about their character will follow.

Clara was (hoog)zwanger.

About Mars

What life with Mars looks like

Mars is a medium-sized puppy/kitten podenco dog waiting at description in AL Ridderkerk.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mars, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mars?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. description handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mars on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mars if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — description will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mars already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mars isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with description early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mars and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
