Martha

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 7 years

Loving, easygoing, and very reserved—Marta’s heart can be won with patience. We took the approximately six-year-old Marta from a friendly animal welfare association. Upon her arrival in Germany, she escaped from her foster home and was left to fend for herself for several days before she could be safely captured. This experience has left its mark. At first, Marta approached people with great uncertainty and was reluctant to let anyone touch her for a long time. Today, she lives at a foster home in Bochum and has already made tremendous progress there. Each day, she shows a little more trust and proves just how much potential she holds. Marta truly blossoms when she’s outdoors. She absolutely loves going for walks and is lively, curious, and full of zest for life on these outings. She walks beautifully on the leash and is increasingly attuned to her human companions. She gets along exceptionally well with other dogs and thoroughly enjoys their company. Therefore, we’d like Marta to find a home with a confident, experienced dog—a companion she can look up to. Inside the house or in the garden, Marta still tends to be cautious and uncertain. However, she’s increasingly initiating contact with her trusted caregivers all on her own. Anyone who would like to get to know Marta should bring patience, understanding, and the willingness to give her the time she needs every single day. Trust cannot be forced—but Marta shows us every day that she’s ready to build it step by step. Marta is fully house-trained and can already spend some time alone without any problems alongside the resident dogs. We’re looking for a calm home for Marta, one where the people don’t have quick expectations but instead take joy in accompanying this special dog through both small and big steps of progress. Whoever gives her this chance will witness how uncertainty gradually turns into trust—and eventually, a truly special bond will develop.

About Martha

What life with Martha looks like

Martha is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at 4animals e.V. — Hundeauffangstation HASt in Essen.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Martha, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Martha?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. 4animals e.V. — Hundeauffangstation HASt handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Martha on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Martha if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — 4animals e.V. — Hundeauffangstation HASt will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Martha already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Martha isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with 4animals e.V. — Hundeauffangstation HASt early rather than rehoming privately; they know Martha and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
