Adopt Mary

Mixed Breed · Female

Mary is just one and a half years old (as of 03/2021), falls into the category of bat ear, is also welcome in the club of long noses and competes with Rudolph with her bright red nose. The wonderful white and red Podenco was found in a roadside ditch. Mary was extremely lucky that one of the volunteer helpers of ArcoNatura discovered her on the way home, because hundreds of cars had already driven by the injured female dog. We don't know how Mary ended up by the road, but the season is typical for abandoned, injured, abused and mistreated hunting dogs that were sorted out as unsuitable or simply too unimportant for their owner to feed through the summer until state-subsidized animal cruelty is allowed again. Mary had been hit by a car and had very painful bruises, which is why she couldn't run away. In this case, it was perhaps luck in misfortune, because our partner was able to load the trembling princess alone into the car and take her to the veterinary clinic. There, they found that Mary was covered in bruises and also suffered from a cruciate ligament tear. Immediately, the grateful female dog was operated on and Mary could then move directly into an experienced and loving foster home where she can rest and recover. Meanwhile, the small bundle of misery has become a beautiful Podenco. Mary has a wonderful, calm character and is almost invisible in the house, typical for her breed. She lives without problems with cats and children, is cuddly, attentive and eager to learn. (And - one has to mention it - she is now a little bit round around the middle, the long period of recovery has left a few fat pockets. But Mary is already working hard on her bikini body!) Mary shows herself as easygoing and modest in her foster family, she was housetrained in no time, quickly learned that leash and harness mean that you can find new friends outside, stroll through the streets and follow the events in Linares' city center or walk through meadows and discover the world. For a nice walk with the family, Mary is always available, and she also loves coming home. A biscuit to replenish lost calories and onto the couch for television, preferably with a two-legged friend who enjoys a thorough cuddle as much as our elegant beauty. Everything could be so perfect, if only it weren't for the fact that our foster homes are for recovering dogs, for the small and weak - and since Mary is now doing so well, the day could soon come when she has to vacate her temporary home for a dog that needs this form of accommodation more than her. To spare Mary the experience of an animal shelter, we are therefore looking for her future home, her own family, her new best friends, who want to give her love and security for life ... Contact us, Mary (and many others) are waiting for their ticket to happiness!.

About Mary

What life with Mary looks like

Mary is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mary, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mary?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mary on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mary if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mary already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mary isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mary and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
