Mau - here to stay... Update: July 2024 Our Mau is allowed to stay on her foster home. She has settled in so well and is currently in very good health, which led us to decide that we will not take Mau out of her familiar environment. We would be very grateful for sponsors for Mau, as we will continue to cover all running costs for her. ************************* Today, we want to introduce a cat to you that some of our trap team might still recognize. I'm talking about our elderly lady Mau. Mau originally came to us because her owner had passed away. It was clear from the start: she has a few challenges. One of her trademarks is her thick nose; a tumor is suspected there. A previous swab test was not conclusive, but a more precise diagnosis can only be made under anesthesia with a biopsy, which our treating dermatologist advises against at the moment. Additionally, she has a skin condition confirmed by a dermatologist, called plasma cell pododermatitis, which causes her paw pads to become severely inflamed, swollen, and very painful on all four paws. She was in long-term treatment and was eventually rehomed, but she came back after just a few months because she was overburdened by her new home. According to her owner, she was heavily soiled and had opened her claws during treatment of her paws. Back at the animal shelter, we were desperate for a solution, and a foster home with a veterinary nurse was found. She has been living there for almost three months and has proven to be an absolute dream cat. She was house-trained at the beginning, except for two incidents, and allows herself to be treated for her paws and is simply clingy, cuddly, and playful. Now, Mau is on the lookout for a home where the person is very homey and allows her to cuddle and play a lot, because she loves her primary caregiver more than anything, and being alone for long periods is a burden for her. She will be rehomed as a house cat, as she cannot go outside with her sometimes open paws, but she would be very happy with a cat-safe balcony🤗 Currently, all paws are completely healed, but this can change due to various factors such as a change in diet, meaning the paws can become inflamed again. She is currently receiving kidney food for support of her kidneys, but also food with single protein put, which she tolerates very well. This cat is to be kept indoors only.

About Mau

What life with Mau looks like

Mau is a senior european shorthair cat waiting at Tierheim Koblenz in Koblenz.

Senior cats are the gentlest house guests: predictable, mostly silent, and grateful for a sunny windowsill. Older cats often have minor dental or kidney issues — keep an eye on water intake and weight. Many sleep eighteen hours a day and want no part of any drama.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mau, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mau?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Koblenz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mau on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mau if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Koblenz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mau already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mau isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Koblenz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mau and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
