Adopt Maurice

Dachshund · Male · 3 years

Maurice – a little guy with a big personality Maurice was found and came into the animal shelter as a cute but very confident dog. He was rehomed once, but unfortunately had to return because a bite incident occurred in his new home. Maurice needs a dog-experienced home, ideally terrier-experienced, where he can be read and clear rules are established in everyday life. At the beginning, a separate area for him is helpful – this could also be useful beyond that. What sets me apart: I am people-oriented – but only if you take the time to get to know me. I am house-trained and know basic commands. I can be led past other dogs without issue. I love fetch games and can be motivated well with food. I orient myself strongly to other dogs – with a confident canine companion by my side, I learn to trust faster. I am happy to be part of things without being in the spotlight – I just want to "go with the flow." What you need to work on with me: I don't share – especially not my food. I can be moody and need people who can handle it well. I do not like being pressured – some movements can make me uncomfortable. I probably had bad experiences – currently, I do not like being touched. Our getting to know each other will take time – please bring patience. I bit in my last home – clear rules and structure are therefore essential. A secure retreat is very important for me in the adaptation process. What I am looking for: A home with dog or, even better, terrier experience. People who do not want a lap dog but a character companion. A quiet household without children. Ideally, a home with a confident single dog (female dog or neutered male dog) that I can orient myself to. Understanding, patience – and the willingness to learn about me step by step and respectfully. Maurice is not an easy dog, but with the right handling, he can become a loyal companion. Interested parties should plan several visits to the animal shelter to build a stable foundation of trust. Those who want to meet Maurice should contact the animal shelter staff at Struppi-Haus between (13–16 hours) or fill out the application form carefully.

About Maurice

What life with Maurice looks like

Maurice is a small adult dachshund dog waiting at Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg in Berlin.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: History of biting incident, requires patient introduction, needs secure retreat area, does not like to be touched initially

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Maurice, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Maurice?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Maurice on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Maurice if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Maurice already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Maurice isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Maurice and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
