Mausi

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 11 years

Mausi was successfully rehomed in Leipzig in September 2015. I am female, spayed, microchipped and born in 2013. I am approximately 55cm tall. I have been waiting for a new home since March 2015. This is what my caretakers say about me: Mausi is one of three dogs that were temporarily placed with an older lady for rehoming. For about a month. It then turned into almost a year. The foreign organization that left their helpers unreasonably in the lurch. No association, mediator or transporter was reachable anymore. So much more responsible the retired teacher. She took care of the dogs, even though three puppies actually overwhelmed her. Every medical care was taken over by her, and finally she found help from animal lovers who established contact with us. The dogs were doing very well, but the puppies had not yet learned much. They quickly adapted to our environment, after initial uncertainty, walking on a leash is now being trained. Mausi is the most timid of the three dogs, after a short sniffing minute she does make contact and cuddles, but other candidates are pushed aside. She is attentive and eager to learn, sometimes her temperament runs away with her, which quietly slumbers within her, however only within the shelter premises. Especially after being leashed or when passing through doors, she always thinks she has to be first to escape quickly. This, as well as all everyday situations, still needs work. Also, driving in a car still unsettles Mausi, as well as children's noise and crowd of people. If you lose the leash during a walk, she is not reachable due to panic, so special caution, lots of training, trust and building up her self-confidence is needed. However, she remains always obedient, there is no sign of aggression. In her young life, she has had to fight enough to get through her fear. And yet she cautiously builds trust where she feels safe, at times she is appropriately cheerful, which she should always be. Mausi is not completely house-trained yet, but it should still be assumed that Mausi needs some more practice to reach perfection. We are looking for people with the necessary sensitivity, who need an insecure dog, without protecting him too much. If there are children, we require proper guidance for the children. Mausi is compatible with other animals, she always submits herself. Due to her shyness, she is very alert, and a little counteraction should be done here. A confident male dog who supports in the education would certainly be an advantage. But also as a single dog with weekly visits to dog training classes to maintain contact with other animals, Mausi would feel comfortable. With this option she would also be suitable as a first dog, but professional guidance would be a must. Anyone who would like to show Mausi how cheerful life can be in their own home, is welcome to visit us...with a little patience she will also come out of her hole, we will help...eMail:

About Mausi

What life with Mausi looks like

Mausi is a medium-sized senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Schkortitz in Grimma.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mausi, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mausi?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Schkortitz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mausi on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mausi if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Schkortitz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mausi already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mausi isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Schkortitz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mausi and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
