Maverick

Mixed Breed · Male

Maverick has had a difficult start to life. He came into our care as a stray after being trapped. Despite our very best efforts, life in foster care has never really suited him. The reality is that Maverick finds confinement and people entering his space incredibly threatening. This has led to fear-based defensive behaviour, including hissing, growling and - if pushed beyond his comfort zone - attempts to lash out. We want to be completely honest about this because Maverick deserves a home that understands him, not one that expects him to be something he’s not. The encouraging part of his story is that we know there is another side to him. Before coming into rescue, Maverick was regularly choosing to visit a home where he appeared completely relaxed, happily sleeping on the arms of the sofas. This tells us that when he feels safe and in control of his environment, he has the potential to become a settled, domestic cat. More recently, he has made encouraging progress in a larger foster setup with access via a cat flap to a secure outdoor area. Having the choice to move away when he feels overwhelmed has made a real difference. He now willingly approaches his feeder and is noticeably more confident, although he can still react defensively if he feels frightened. We’re looking for a very special home for Maverick. Ideally, he would have a spacious settling-in room where he can adjust at his own pace, rather than a small enclosure. A secure catio or safe enclosed outdoor space would be a huge bonus, allowing him the freedom to make his own choices while remaining safe, although we appreciate this may be difficult to find. His adopter will need to be experienced with nervous or semi-feral cats, understand feline body language, and appreciate that trust cannot be rushed. Maverick doesn’t need someone to force affection on him - he needs someone patient enough to let him decide when he’s ready. His new family will also need to be extremely careful with doors and windows during his settling-in period, as he is likely to bolt if given the opportunity. Maverick is not the right cat for every home, and that’s perfectly okay. But we truly believe there is someone out there who will see past his fear and give him the time, space and understanding he has never really had. Watching a cat like Maverick slowly learn that people can be trusted is one of the most rewarding journeys there is. If you think you could offer him that chance, please complete our adoption form. About Maverick

What life with Maverick looks like

Maverick is a extra-large adult mixed breed cat waiting at RSPCA Stourbridge and District in United Kingdom.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Maverick, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Maverick?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. RSPCA Stourbridge and District handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Maverick on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Maverick if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — RSPCA Stourbridge and District will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Maverick already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Maverick isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with RSPCA Stourbridge and District early rather than rehoming privately; they know Maverick and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
