Maya

Female · Senior · 10 years

Maya has had a difficult life, attached permanently, deprived of freedom and genuine interactions. This past has left its mark, particularly a lack of trust in humans, which she has had to learn to overcome little by little. Today, Maya has truly come a long way. She now appreciates human presence and trusts them. She willingly approaches people, even offering playful calls. She is discovering what it means to share, to have fun, and to receive attention. Walks have become genuine moments of pleasure for her, just like the gentle caresses she seeks. However, her lack of activity throughout her life has had an impact on her physical condition. Maya is still not very muscular and may encounter difficulties in her movements. She will therefore need a patient home, ready to accompany her gently to help her gradually regain muscle tone at her own pace. She benefits from the support of the 30 Millions d'Amis Foundation: her adoption is free (capped at 50 €) and assistance up to 1000 € for veterinary expenses is provided.

FR·Show original

About Maya

What life with Maya looks like

Maya is a senior dog waiting at SPA de Besançon in France.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇫🇷Adopting from France

French refuges follow the SPA framework: adopters sign a cession contract that includes sterilization, vaccinations, microchip identification, and rabies passport. Fees are typically €150–€300. Many refuges work with rescue transport partners for cross-border placements.

Frequently asked

Adopting Maya, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Maya?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SPA de Besançon handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Maya on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Maya if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SPA de Besançon will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Maya already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Maya isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SPA de Besançon early rather than rehoming privately; they know Maya and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (FR). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
