Maya

Staffordshire Bull Terrier · Female · Adult · 7 years

Maya had already found a dream home in Lower Saxony, unfortunately, it turned out that she unexpectedly cannot stand cats. We of course tested this here at the animal shelter beforehand, but her reaction did not allow for any negative assumptions. However, animals can behave differently in a private home compared to the animal shelter, especially when they start to feel at home and become more confident. Now, our Maya is back at the animal shelter and starting a new attempt to find a home without sappy roommates or, generally, without other animals. Originally, Maya came to us due to a violation of the animal protection law. She is a very lively and people-oriented female dog who wants to be kept busy. She especially enjoys foraging games. She knows the basic commands and is house-trained. She can calmly pass by other dogs, but she does not want any more contact with fellow animals. Sometimes, in her youthful exuberance, her temperament can be quite strong – she doesn’t mean to be bad, but she can sometimes be a bit rambunctious in handling. Therefore, it is very important that the person at the other end of the leash is a) steadfast and b) also “friendly and assertive” if needed. Maya is simply sometimes a bit gross-motoric and takes too little consideration of people at times. We would like to find a home for this charming temperament bundle with experienced owners who have a lot of time for her. If there are any existing children, they should be at least 14 years old; she is absolutely not suitable for younger or smaller children. Muzzle and leash requirements in public are automatic. Currently, Maya cannot climb stairs due to knee problems, so an ground-floor home would be ideal. Would you like to give Maya a nice home or do you have any questions? Then feel free to contact her animal caretakers at the Benji House or fill out the form below. We look forward to your inquiry!

About Maya

What life with Maya looks like

Maya is a medium-sized adult staffordshire bull terrier dog waiting at Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg in Berlin.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Cruciate ligament problems - cannot climb stairs currently

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Maya, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Maya?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Maya on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Maya if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Maya already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Maya isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Maya and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
